cast bullets in the 7.65x53mm argentine mauser

Long been a fan of the Argentine mauser (1891 variant) and it's cartridge the 7.65x53mm cartridge. I had my first one way back in 1963. I have two sportered ones with commercial sights and one carbine with the military sights. Thursday I took delivery of another 1891 rifle that had been reworked by one of the importers and had the barrel shortened,front sight relocat6ed and had the military stock somewhat modified. What I'm looking for is a cast bullet about180 grains weight with gas check. I have IMR 4759,Hogdon 4895,4227.2400,and a couple cans of Accurate 5744. Winchester standard primers and Hornady 150 and 174 grain jacketed bullets but this post is about cast bullets. Thanking you in advance for your help,suggestions and or comments.Frank

The Lee C3121851R is an inexpensive mould to try. I would start there. There are quite a few 91 Mauser users on here that will be along shortly. I love Mausers but somehow have never owned an 1891- good luck with your latest one.

This is also on my “to do” list.

I made up a hundred cases last year and cast up some LEE 155’s I have a number of other dia appropriate cast to try as well.

I have two, a strong 1909 Argentine (98 mauser) and a ol timer thats a predecessor to-the 1891 (1889 maybe?) with a Shrouded barrel made in Norwich CT. This one is what Id like to shoot so gonna keep pressures real low. Gun is real Nice inside maybe 80% nice. But outside its closer to a 40/50% Gun finish wise. It wasnt abused gust not properly stored. Action is butter smooth and all numbers match.



Im likely gonna start with Unique and 2400.

Probably the best bullet to start with (and maybe finish with too!). The C312185 is an excellent bullet for the 7,65 Argentine and is my standard cast bullet for my four 7.65 Argentines; three M91 Actioned and a M1909. The middle M91 has been rebarreled to 35 Remington. I also use the 314299 but it is a heavier bullet than you want. I mostly use 4895 with a Dacron filler under the C312-185 but the other powders you list will do as well.

The Gentleman from Texas is right on the money. I have the mould he mentions and it does drop large enough to be useful. An 1891 Argentine Mauser was on my want list for many years. A short time ago, I finally found one.

I settled on another Lee mould. CTL-160R. They drop at .3135". I tumble them in Lee liquid alox (straight) and install a gas check with a .314" Lee push through die. The final product averages 172.5 - 173 gr. I load them over 16 gr. 2400 in Prvi brass. The groups on paper are not spectacular, but I'm not out to shoot bughole groups. I just want to hear it go bang and hear the boolit hit my steel target. An Argentine Mauser model 1891 is a fine rifle.

Right now, my only 'Argie' is an '09 Engineer Carbine that really likes cast boolits. Maybe a little lighter weight than OP suggested but I get good performance from the Lee CTL312-160-2R...a gas-checked tumble-lube that drops 162 gr from my alloy. I powder-coat and size these to .313 and load over 17.5 gr 2400. Never bothered to chrono the load but, @ 100 yds, is ever bit as accurate as some old Interarms ball ammo that I had on the shelf.

Another vote for the heavy boolit, i use NOE 316299 in 2 peruvians 1909 rifles (almost the same as the argentinian 1909) with 16gr of 2400 and it gives goods results so far.

My C312-185 drops at close to .314 with #2 alloy, won't with COWW though. My NOE 311299 drops #2 alloy bullets at .314 and 313 with COWW + 2% tin. If your 7.65 runs .314 then I'd suggest the NOE 314299 or the 316299 as they are cut for COWWs.

Lyman 314299 is another great one for 7.65 x 53. Its a little heavier (200 grains depending some on which alloy you use), The Lyman cast bullet handbook edition 3 has some very good loads for cast.

Well have plenty of 2400 and unique and already have the 314299 which has .303 on the bore riding section and .314 on the body. Still have a RCBS 3 die set for loading and a bunch of ancient Norma brass. As well as some PPU brass. Larry, still have the 1891 I bought off you years ago. Also have the one Ben found at a local gun shop where he lives. Getting harder to find one with a bright shiney barrel, last few I looked at were like the inside of a coal mine with the lights out. But they show an abundance of craftmanship. Think the Czech made Persian 98/29 Mausers come in second place. Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my post regarding information. I think that 1891 is narrower than 1909, 311 or 312
I didn't have a good experience with that Lee mold
I have greatly improved the Lyman 314299 in my 1909
today I made a load with 42 grains of W760 and got a MOA at 2300 FPS

Actually have a couple jugs of 4759 and was using it in my Finn M27 with the 314299. Sounds good to me. Was using 20.0 grains with the x54r. What would be an appropriate charge with the 314299 in the 7.65x43mm?. I have an 1891 carbine with nice bore,but have to recrown it as it looked to have been dropped on the muzzle. Once it get the cover off the muzzle will see if its long enough to fit through the headstock. Frank

The same 20 gr 4759 with a dacron filler worked very well for me. 21 - 22 gr w/o the filler.
