picking up a new (used) one today.

Went to the gun shop yesterday and they had a real nice 06 win featherweight controlled round fed gun on the rack. Looked like new. Got bsing with the owner and he said he has people in line to get 9mms. I told him id gladly trade one for that 70. He asked me what i had and it told him id consider parting with one of my shields or my 17. We ended up agreeing on my 2.0 shield which by the way i paid 350 bucks for a year ago. I didn't really need a third o6 but then i have 8 9mm handguns too and the featherweights have always in my eyes been the best looking factory rifle made. I cringe thinking about how much some sucker is going to pay for that shield.

Wow, good trade. I should probably get out to the local shops and see what the situation is turning up on used racks.

    Nice grab ! !

I like FW's, too - have had them in .30-06 and 7x57, with one other: a .338 WinMag in a FW stock.

slapped a vx2 i had in the safe on it and bore sighted it. Wont get time till at least monday to shoot it. Dont even have time for load development this year. If i use it it will be with the best of which ammo my other two 06s like.

You made an excellent even trade. Trading your Glock 17 even for that rifle would also have been an excellent trade.

yup there isnt much of a better all around rifle then a 70 or 700 in 06. 06 has allways been my favorite rifle round. Its what others are measured by and the 70? nothing needs to be said.

just the shield. He said the hot commodity right now are ccw guns the the 17 is just to big. It was ok with me. the 17 is worth twice as much and i have 3 shields in 9 and only the one 17. didnt even offer him my 19 or 43. he tried for the second time to swap for some reloaded ammo instead of a gun too. He said hes desperate for 9 and 556 ammo not just to sell but for himself. I don't know him that well and surely arent going to do something illegal to get a gun and would have to worry about it coming back if someone's gun blew up. I will only give ammo to the local sheriffs dept and a couple of my closest friends and wouldn't even sell it to them. But i could have walked out of there with that rifle for a 1000 rounds of 556 which wouldn't have even put a good sized dent in my stash. My guess is he gave pennys on the dollar for that rifle on trade. Hes kind of a chiester anyway.

That was a very good deal Lloyd!!!

I had a M70 in .30/06 and sold it when I decided to standardize on the .308. I regret both decisions. I was lulled by the .308 Kool-aid of it being current military and cheap brass.

I have a M70 in .308 and it irks me that my .308 T/C Compass will out shoot it. Hope you get great accuracy out of yours!!!

I love a good rifle in 30-06. It is my go to cartridge for any game larger than coyote.
Those model 70 Winchesters were awesome rifles.

I had a FW in 243, 308, 30/06 & 270. They were all pre 64s. The 308 I still have. The first new rifle I bought when I was a kid. It’s accurate but it lets you know its there when you touch it off. I had a 257 FW from 80s but never shot it much before trading it off.

well it looks to be a shooter. All i had loaded was my go to 06 load that shoots well in my 06s ive tried it in. 59 grains of 4831 a fed primer and a 150 grain flat base interlock. Few rounds to get it on target and shot two 5 shot groups that both went just under an inch. That was with a very hot barrel ( probably 20 shots total without letting it cool other then walking down to check a target. Heat waves were really comming off of it and it was only 43 degrees outside. Either i got real lucky of that gun will be an abosolute tack driver with some load developement next year. Tod my buddy i might just say the heck with it and just use that load but then id have 3 06s that shot the same load. Id like to see something in the 165 grain class shoot in it just for something differnt

Great trade Lloyd. An ‘06 in a M70 is about as versatile a hunting rifle around.
