WTS Lot of 50 Lead Ingots 400+ Pounds, local pick up in Phoenix metro area

Up for sale are these 50 ingots of pure lead. Each ingot weighs 8+ pounds so that's over 400 pounds of lead. Price is $400 (cash only) for the lot. Sorry no shipping, the lead is in Chandler, AZ which is where pick up will be. There have been a lot of questions about purity and hardness. Part of the controversy was my mistake when I incorrectly listed the BHN in a comment (since corrected). The BHN is 6.5 as determined by an average of 10 readings taken with a Cabine Tree Tester.

What "pure lead" where these melted down from?

The ingots were professionally cast by a foundry and some are stamped PB on the bottom. The BHN of the ingots is 6.5. San Jose isn't very close to Phoenix. Were you interested in buying?

The BHN of the ingots is 11.5.

FYI: as an example COWWs have a BHN around 11 - 12. Pure is around 5 - 6. Thought you might want to clarify what the alloy is you are trying to sell. $1 per pound is good price, but you are contradicting yourself as to what you are selling. Just trying to help...

I'm sure you are right but I'm just going by what the experts who tested the lead are telling me. If it's a good price then regardless of BHN I'm hoping someone is interested.

No, but you're welcome to come by and take a look. This is part of a relative's estate and we're just going by the notes that he left. Also our gunsmith, who is helping us out, felt that the description of pure lead was accurate and he also said it's obvious by the smoothness of the bars that it was a professional cast. Sorry I can't offer more info, I'm just going by the limited information I've found in his notes and paperwork.

If you want to do your own cheap hardness test, go to an art/hobby store and pick up a few drawing pencils.

Get these three if you don't want a full set of 10 - 12.

Pick a clean flat surface on the lead bar. Hold sharpened pencil like you will write with it, and push the tip away from you to see if it scratches the lead or just slides over it without making a minor groove.

6B - if this will scrape the lead surface (not just smear graphite on it), you have 5 BNH lead - soft, almost pure (plumber's) lead

4B - if this will scrape the lead, it's 9 BNH or softer.

2B - if this will scrape the lead, it is softer than 12 BNH

It doesn't take much time to learn how to test lead with art pencils, and they are pretty accurate (they match my Cabine indent tester pretty well (at least until up around 24 BNH).
