Looks like this will be my next project...Thanks for all the good info this is a great sticky.
I believe I can handle the task but may need a few wiring questions answered once I get to that point. I can follow a wiring diagram and have decent skills with 120 and 240 wiring but I'm not sure of any of the terms being used for this project. I would really like to know how each part works for the system so I can have a better understanding on how it is put together. I want to put it together myself as funds are tight and it looks like the best option to acquire a good one for a decent price.
Any of you willing to answer some P.M's as I move along with this project?
Would this temp controller work with a TC?
1/16 DIN PID Temperature Controller (Relay Output)
One of the unique features of this controller is that the built-in relay can handle 10 A of current at 120VAC. That means 1200 watts of load can be connected directly to the controller without the need of an external relay or SSR. That is a very convenient for applications in which only a small heater is used.

I have had good luck with Auber. I would not run an internal relay near max though. Resistive loads like heaters are consistent start to finish but normal electrical practice is to use no more than 80% of circuit rating.
Another thought is relay cycles in a mechanical relays are limited by contact life. How many times they can take the arc created when the points break under load. The SSR doesn't have contacts and switches at the 0 volts in the AC cycle and should last indefinitely. The relay should last a quite while but once it's done so is the controller.

^^^ i was just thinking that a mechanical relay will most likely fail after a while, and for another $20 i can use an SSR with it which will most likely last a lifetime...
do you think the 4" TC probe will work with the Lee 4-20 pot?

This is scary! I am new to this group. But my day job is as a process instrumentation engineer designing and selling all kinds of control systems, both PID and on-off. You guys are ventruing into a totally different branch than I ever thought I would find in a casting forum! EXCELLENT!
This stuff is NOT rocket science.
With the availability of "smart" programmable controllers today, it is easy to control the temp of a simple lead pot heater. Prices are way down from what they were when I started in the industrial controls business 30 years ago. Today, most of my customers use PLC's (programmable logic controllers) and DCS's (distributed control systems) to do many of the simple loop controls. Then they can view, log, and archive the results of the procsses on PC's and data servers.
