    Question for you southern guys

What's a bream ? Always read about you all fishing for them , I googled a pic and got conflicting pictures some they show bluegill and other assorted sunfish/pan fish and some pics show a different kind of fish it still panfish like in shape . Sorta looks like a Virginia spot but freshwater of course . Do you guys just call all pan fish bream?or what exactly is it ? I know we don't have them up here in Pa.

    RU shooter,

At least in Northeast TX, where I was born & raised, "bream" are any members of the perch family that are called SUNFISH, except white/black crappie.

I think it's a general term for sunfish......at least here in SC, folks will use 'bream' to describe species such as redear, warmouth, pumpkinseed, etc.

in texas, bluegills/sunfish are considered bream. In other states I think its an actual fish. Also, we call them "perch" but they ain't the same yellow perch ice fisherman catch.

Maybe I'm just mis spelling or mis pronouncing the name ?? Probably the same I'm sure . Like calling a creek a "crick" like we do in western Pa.

brim/bream just depends on the pronunciation, same fish

It’s all trivial, location specific slang.

I was in my mid 20’s before I ever heard the word venison. I thought then, what tha ‘ell is a venison? What a stupid name for deer meat. LOL!!

We also have a hybrid bream called a red ear. It’s got a red dot on the gills. Sort of a super size bream.
    Mmm mmmmm good

    Derek P Houston; sparkyv,

Oddly enough, I've found BOTH spellings in TPWD & AGRILIFE documents for the same group of panfish, that we Texicans also call "perch".
(As far as I know, we have NO yellow perch in TX, other than in some aquariums. - Like the big aquarium at Fair Park in Dallas.)

    yours, tex

Bream is any small fish that resembles sun fish/ pan fish that is to small to eat but big enough for bait.

    buckwheatpaul,

Fwiw, I do NOT eat brim/bream. Instead, I use them for trotline & set-hook bait for catfish.
(Flatheads love them & they stay alive for quite some time, IF you handle them carefully. = The biggest yellow-cat that I ever saw/caught was hooked on a "limb line" baited with a BIG red-ear. )
