Oldest - that's easy.
I shoot an 1866 Rem roller in .50-70. Hard to top that as I think it may be the first
central fire cartridge with the .22 short, .44 Henry and .58 Trapdoor rimfire preceeding it, along
with a bunch of VERY confusing (at least to ME) 56-56,52-56, 56-50, 50-52 or whatever (!?) large
rimfire cartridges for the Spencer, Triplet & Scott and such Civil War carbines.
Was .50-70 the first central fire cartridge?
Newest?? I guess I'm pretty old fashioned. . . . . . . prolly 7-08, or maybe .223. Nothing
REALLY new has piqued my interest lately.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.
Old- 22 short.
New 357 Max.
The man who invented the plow was not bored. He was hungry.
maybe i should have said besides .22rf! i assumed EVERYBODY shot .22's!
The oldest I shoot is the 45 ACP (1904; John Browning), but nipping closely at its heels is the 375 H&H that I shoot as well (1912; The British company: Holland & Holland). As for the newest cartridge it would be the 454 Casull round (1957; Dick Casull and Jack Fulmer). I really like bigger chunks of lead flying around.
Springfield XD tactical: 45 ACP
Savage 116 Alaskan Guide: 375 H&H

I shoot an 1866 Rem roller in .50-70. Hard to top The Springfield Armory civil war conversions to 50-70 were very early, if not first (Model 1866), specifically the Allin conversion from 58 muzzle loader to lined 50-70..... which I shoot. The trial rifles for the 50-70 tests from various suppliers were in there also. that as I think it may be the first
central fire cartridge There are several examples in the Tower of London on individual iron cartridges fired by a percussion cap for repeating firearms.... where that nipple is I don't know, but the first drawn central fire cartrige case was the 50-70, Benet primed of course. with the .22 short, .44 Henry and .58 Trapdoor Model 1865 rimfire preceeding it, along
with a bunch of VERY confusing (at least to ME) 56-56,52-56, 56-50, 50-52 or whatever (!?) large
rimfire cartridges for the Spencer, Triplet & Scott and such Civil War carbines.![]()
