They are indeed made from zinc since 1982. Prior to that they were various brass alloys. Zinc contamination would make me nervous as well.

I like the dial thermometer for my needs. I keep my lead in the 690-750 range, and I get lots of really good bullets.

Good point re: the zinc. The purpose of my comment was to suggest that since the lead's reflectivity is a problem, you could put any non-reflective piece of metal (with density lower than lead and melting point higher), on top of the melt to take an IR reading. As I said, I have no first hand experience as I'm quite happy with my dial thermometer, but I do recall reading about this hint at one time.

I have one from the Antimony man and an RCBS, both are spot on. I had them checked during a visit to a measuring tool company that specialses in heat measurement equipment.

Check some of these out.

Their supplies come and go, so I check in with them every couple of weeks. Got my thermometer from them. Paid something like $22 including shipping and it goes up to 1000F.

Never looked back.

Received a "Atkins digital pyrometer" 2 days ago off of eBay, total cost $31.00 I checked it and my Lyman dial thermometer in boiling water. The Lyman read about 205 Deg. and the Atkins read 211 Deg.
I actually paid less for the Atkins than I did for the Lyman when you include shipping.

If your temperature is pretty much stable, shoot the pot, not the melt. If your pot is too reflective and you're using an iron ladle, put that in and bring it up to temp, take your reading from that.

I picked up one of the Atkins myself. Works pretty well.
