    50th Anniversary Ruger BH

    Saw one of the 50th anniversary Ruger Blackhawks in 357 today. Gun feels really good in the hand.

    I haven't seen one in the flesh, but really fancy one of those 44 Flattops as well.

    That's likely because it has the original Ruger Flattop "XR3" gripframe which is modeled after Colt's SAA...

    I have an original 44 flattop that was made the first or second year of production.
    It does not have original grips , it has Pachmyers . I'd like to get a set or original plastic grips for it

    The first .44 flattops came with walnut grips. Had a round Ruger emblem inserted each side. I bought mine in spring of '57, and it had walnut. I replaced them with ebony. I don't have the originals or you would be welcome to them. s/n 35xx.

    If you do more research you'll find that some of the first ones came with black hard rubber grips too and in 59 the 10 inch models could be had with stag grips...I won't go further.

    Mine is seriel number 65XX. I've seen adds from old mags showing them with the walnut grips in that time period . But I was also told that they were made with hard plastic as well . Have an early Single Six with plastic grips .

    The more I think about this , the more I think I may need to take some trading material down to my friends shop and see if I can acquire the 50th anniversery 357 Flat Top .

    When I hunt I normally carry a S&W 629 4" , but I think this might be a good carry gun for hunting as well .

    There is a good article/review of the 50th BH written by Brian Pearce in the new Handloader magazine. In the same issue, he wrote an article on loading for .357 magnum.
