What pressure level are you looking for?

40 grains of 4895 will give you an 18,000# pound load

this is in a repro falling block, so lever pressures are fine. i was told by the manufacturer that they test their guns to 40000 psi, but don't want to push it.

i have lots of 5744 and varget. i was thinking of using around 25-26gr of 5744, or trying to find a load for varget. i think this is too heavy of a boolit for fast powders like unique and red dot.

also, my goal is for target shooting to 330 yards, and for hunting deer/blackbear.

i just tried 24 grains of 5744 and 42 grains of varget. the 5744 shot into a 4" group at 51 yards in a 4"wide x 2" high group. the varget shot into about a 2" group, nice and round. i guss i might try working with the varget.

    anyone her shooting heavy ones?

I have used a 500 gr RN boolit and a charge of 28 gr of 5744. It shoots good in my Sharps.

I like IMR-3031 in almost any of my .45-70 loads that I build for a Remington R.B. # 5 because the manuals seem to indicate this powder produces overall the LEAST amount of CUP pressure. Largest boolit I currently shoot is .500 grain and it works well.

If you do not have the Lyman 49th edition reloading manual, I suggest you get this one. It is great because if list all the different CUP pressures for all loads which I believe is critical for guys like you and me because I do not want to shoot my Rem. RB over 30 - 31,000 CUP pressure.

    Good Luck - Sniper Chief
