Balance beam scale// level surface

Hello men--

I just noticed the bench I place my scale on is not level--not off by much-- it took two thicknesses of match book paper two make it level.
this is an r c b s 505 scale-- i usually just put it on the bench and adjust the little wheel to make it read zero. Will it read different if the bench is level and the scale is zeroed ? OR is it the same just as long as you zero the scale??

Within a certain tolerance, the readings should be equalized by setting the "tare" to the new "level" position. ... felix

I wouldn't try to set up on a table that was a lot out of level but a little will not hurt. As long as you can balance the scale at Zero should be alright. After all that's what the adjustment wheel is for.

I picked up a circular level at the local Harbor Freight for cheap. I took a chunk of pine board just a little longer than the scale, and wide enough for the scale and the level. I drilled holes near 2 corners on one end, and a third hole in the center at the other. These holes were just undersize of 1/4", and I threaded a 1" 1/4-20 bolt in each one. I screwed the level to the board next to where the scale sits. Now even with my unlevel bench, I can level the scale. That worked out pretty well, so I made a cover for it, to keep dust off the scale pivots.

One thing to remember is that "level" is on two planes, make sure that the scale doesn't cant forward or backwards (like if your bench slopes toward the front like mine does) because that can monkey with the readings. Also don't forget about our friend Static Electricity, just having a plastic pound bottle of powder 2" behind the mag damper on my scale raises the reading .2 grain.

People sometimes pooh-pooh this, but I always run a thin copper wire from my scale and dispenser to a good ground. I leave it bare, and touch it several times during reloading, too. The wire drains off any static generated by flowing powder, or that I might pick up in my body.

It seems to keep things more accurate - and it can't hurt.

I'll see if I can post pix of my setups. I epoxied nuts into the wood bottoms of the those little boxes so I can level them. The BBK sits on an aluminum plate that is hooked to a good electrical ground. There's about 10 or 12 pounds of lead in those boxes for stability too. Seems to have helped and I regularly use check weights when I setup to use the scales.
