Standard military sight - from back when the officers told the soldiers where to set the distance. You can certainly hunt with it if you figure out how it shoots. Start with it folded and see where the bullets hit at 25 yds, then work your way from there.
So there is no real set distance associated with the numbers? Guess I’ll just have to get out and hit some paper. I had hoped there was a chart or something that those numbers lined up with.
No, there's no set distance with the numbers, unless it was fired with original military ammunition, and even then it wouldn't be precise enough to be dead on at a particular number.
For most hunting you'd never stand the staff upright, and will shoot with it folded down. But it operates somewhat reversed when folded down because when it's folded down there's a big jump on that first step. Then the further it's slid forward the lower the point of impact will be. They did make some rear sights similar to this one that had many smaller steps so you elevated a bit with each step. But yours isn't as adjustable that way, so likely you'll figure out where it hits fully down, and then be limited for any shots further out.
Well thanks for the input. I might be replacing the sight in that case but I’ll see if I can get this one to work for now
I have the same sights on my roller and adjusted POI by working on the front sight; left the rear as-is.
Try your loads on paper and see where and what if any corollate, Then decide what yardage you will want to hit at ??? I have a similar sight in my 45/60, you have to shot your load and see what compares ???
