Playing with 470 Nitro cast boolits

Getting closer to actually firing the NRA Sweepstakes Kreighoff. I received my bullet mold that I designed and had Mountain Molds cut. This is my first mold from him and now I'm thinking it won't be the last either. I specified a 500 gr. bullet with wheelweight alloy, .477" body, .471" nose, 70% meplat. Every spec is right on the money. It casts like a dream, and the bullets just fall out when you open the mold.

I have been slowly aquiring everything needed to handload this behemoth and now have everything but brass, which is near impossible to get right now. And I'll be darned if I'm going to pay $16 a round for factory ammo. I talked to a couple manufactures and they are both saying they are going to produce a run of 470 in a few weeks.

Hopefully I will get everything together and a good load working before deer season. You know how dangerous a rutting whitetail can be.

I was beginning to think I was the ony one who liked doubles, or drillings.
It will almost seem a shame to take such a work of art and fire it off, but that is what it is there for.
My wife is beginning to enjoy centerfire, and she chuckled at the casting comparison to the .22LR.
I have fired many rounds from a 470 Nitro Express. From full tilt, to shoulder saver.
I bet that buck in rut will meet its end!
Have you any photos of the rifle? I would love to have another screen saver. I am tired of my Palma rifle I built. I do not need it on my 'puter, I can merely look over my shoulder. Time for a real firearm.
That is a real crisp casting! I love it. Definately heavy skin.

    docone31,

I don't have any pics of the rifle that are worthy of being a screensaver, but here's what I have on the puter right now. I prolly should take some good pictures of it.

That is one beautiful rifle!...I would love to have a Krieghoff Hubertus single shot in 9.3X74R...A little rich for me however
Looking forward to more pictures and a range report...
I see Buffalo Arms lists 470Nitro brass but I don't know if they are in stock http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/2,38.html

Ted, I won't sleep tonight! That is awsome.
    I love the burly.
    Double rifles are my passion.
After my first divorce, she fought for the doubles, and drilling. She won. She left them in the cases outside our house for over two years. Gonzo. By. What the heck was worth fighting over something like that and just leave it outside? I am still in shock.
I was left with my Farquerson. .375 H&H. I left it in my son's care. I figuired a 20 year old could at least leave it in his closet and ship it to me when I got enough to at least get a room.
THAT DUMB A&& lost it! At least that is what he told me.
I remember the feel, the smell of the wood, the feel of the action closing. I got good at rapid fire. Two in the fingers, two in the pipe.
I left all of mine with the express sights.
    They were my babies.
Even my custom rifles I have had built are not the same. A Ruger #1 is not the same. Close, but not the same.
Take good care of the baby. She deserves it.
Definately, get a screen saver up. I am drooling.
Beauty like that, soon will cease to exist.

If you don't take that thing over to Africa and pop something dangerous....you should be required to give that rifle to someone who WILL. LOL.

I darned near bought one way back in 1998 when Kreighoff first brought them out. WISH I had.

Beautiful rifle. I've got a K-80 shotgun. K gun quality is 2nd to none.

Have you logged on to the AccurateReloading forums yet?? I'd be VERY surprised if someone over there couldn't line you up with a half dozen .470 cases.

    TedH,

Do a search for TNT Guns in Gillette, Wyoming. You will most likely have to call them. The last time I was there I think they had some empties for the 470 and larger nitro cartridges.

    During the years between 1970 and 1980 I had access to a 475 #2 Jeffery's double.

The brass was from the owner and worked okay, primers were the odd sized Kynochs and bullets were non existant. So were loading dies, well they existed but I did not have the money to spend for dies that were for a rifle I did not own.

Anyway, back to bullets. I had good luck paper patching 458 bullets and boolits up to the correct diamater. I pass it along as an option for you.
Knowledge I take to my grave is wasted.

I prefer to use cartridges born before I was.

Success doesn't make me happy, being happy is what allows me to be successful.
