PSA carbine on the way

I got a good deal on a Palmetto State Armory complete carbine lower awhile back and have been thinking about uppers. Decided that I want an M16 carbine style upper with mid-length gas system. PSA finally got them back in so I ordered one. I would have preferred 1:9 twist, but 1:7 is all they had. It should work just fine with 55 and 62 grain slugs, right?

I bought a Colt AR15 A2 HBAR shortly after they were released, I guess that was the early to mid 80's. That rifle did good work with 55-70 gr bullets. Even the Win. surplus 55 gr FMJ bullets grouped excellent as long as they were sorted, with good consistent base closures. The Hornady 60 gr spire point did very well although about 1 in 10 or 12 would not make it to the 100 yard target, resulting in the grey mist. The Sierra 63 gr semi-point was the lights out best bullet accuracy wise followed closely by the Speer 70 gr semi point. I didn't try lighter than 55 gr and nothing available heavier than 70 gr. at that time that I knew of. I shot mostly Win 748 powder and IMR 4895 powder loading from the freeby Win. reloading guide of that time and the Speer, Sierra and Hornady manuals, and articles by Ed Harris in the NRA American Rifleman M16 Ar15 reprint.

I ordered one this morning and got a tracking number this afternoon. The 1:7 will do fine for what I want it for.

As long as its not a pencil profile it should work ok

Thanks. Its not pencil profile, I would guess it is one step below HBAR. Mebbe the same as the M4 without the grenade launcher notch.

The first AR15s put together here are a Dissipator and a carbine. Both have PSA complete uppers with 7" twist 16" FN made barrels. They have shot 80grs down to 52grs to the same level of good accuracy. They didn't like 62gr fmj but we have no use for an fmj here anyway.

I prefer mid gas 1:8 in 16".

Too bad even PSA had to raise their prices 20% due to demand but they still have some deals.

Try 60, 65, 68 grains too.

I would prefer 1:8 too but all they had were the M4 style which I don't like. Even with higher prices I'll still have less in this rifle than a basic Ruger or S&W from a big retailer nearby.

Sorry, no pics, have to use your imagination.

I built it up for my wife, it's on a MilSport lower with a repro A1 stock and cheapo flipup rear sight for now until she decides on what she wants for sights.

I've gone to 1:8 on mine and the 223 Wylde chamber

1-7 will work fine. matter of fact ive got 1-7 1-8 and 1-9 guns and the two most accurate are 1-7 guns both cheap psa's. They both shoot 55 grain vmax and nos bts under an inch. 1-7 is a bit to fast for a 22250 but at the speeds your getting out of a 16 inch 556 they do fine.

Got my upper and slapped it on the lower along with the carry handle rear sight. Took it out for a spin at 50 yards in the back field this afternoon. The carbine fired and functioned 100%, and seems to be well made. Unfortunately it also has a case of the wandering zero. It shoots high and to the right and adjusting the windage and elevation doesnt affect it much. I'm thinking the cheap carry handle sight is the culprit here, it is a no name $20.00 unit. The adjustments seem to work properly, but I wonder if they are shifting under recoil like a bad scope. Found a great deal on an Anderson Mfg A4 style carry handle so I ordered it.

Don't know why I didn't think of this before, I picked up a Ruger rapid deploy folding rear sight at a local shop today. Hopefully, I can shoot the carbine again this weekend. If it is still off with this sight then back to PSA it goes.

I have only put a few rounds through this one and it seems fine. How many rounds have you put through it?

I honestly don't know why 1:8 isn't more popular. It's not a compromise for anything. Pretty sure the only reason 1:7 became a thing is because of tracers - but I could be wrong about that.
