Has IMR discontinued 4320? It's not even listed at Graf or Powder Valley.

IMR 4320 is a great powder with a good nich in many mid sized cases as well as it works great in 223,etc
However, from my experience Varget has almost duplicated it in this range, to include the 308, 223.

It would appear that IMR-4320 is no more. It is not even listed on the IMR website as one of their powders. A shame.
Yes, it would seem that Varget has taken the place of 4320. Same speed but easier metering and less temperature sensitive.

It was the best metering IMR stick powder ever made, right there with 7828 super short cut, I used it in 22-250 and 308.

IMR 4320 is the very first powder I handloaded with as a 19 year old “kid”. As I moved from loading primarily for a 250/3000 in a Savage 99 to a 243 Win in a bolt gun, I went to IMR 4350 and my use of 4320 just about went to zero.
You have to “know” that with the field of powders available being so crowded, there will be more losses of choices. It’s pure economics.

I just dug around in the powder cabinet and found a bottle of IMR 4320 and one of Varget. The Varget kernels measure .033 " diameter and average .062" long while IMR 4320 measures .033" diameter(same) and .042" long(.020 shorter). The original short cut powder!

I've used IMR4320 for several cartridges over the years. It was either discontinued or very hard to find for a while thirty or so years ago. I began using IMR4064 in place of 4320. I recall that with at least one cartridge, accuracy and velocity were unchanged and charge weights of the two powders were very close. I haven't bought either powder in years; H4895 has replaced them both for my purposes.
Too bad if it is so. Like 4895 if you look at manuals it works in almost anything. I ended up with 7 lbs in an estate buy 10 years ago or more. He shot a lot of 6.5 tcu which was the powder for that. It does good in the 35 Whelen and several other cartridges including 17 Remington.

it would have been nice if they had let us know it was being phased out as they did with 4759 give folks opportunity to stock up. Its amazing how many new powders have been introduced in past 15 years or so kind of like molds there are more options than ever before. I guess they just want everyone to work up new loads with new powders that will increase their sales.
That's too bad. The best 308 load I ever shot was with 4320 and the Sierra Matchking. Three shots under a dime at 100 yds.

Thats unfortunate... I have a little on hand thankfully. Its my GOTO 308 powder.

As ive said before, it figures since I chose it to standardize my rifle loads. Varget may be a great substitute, but not when everybody is buying it all.
I'm surprised. I think of Varget as the benchmark powder.
In my early days 4320 was not available to me but it was for me the benchmark from a loading perspective. It seemed to be the powder for the 303 Brit. What I had available was very close ( Musgrave MR200 made by Somchem) and I used 4320 data as a comparison to work up loads. That Musgrave powder was was very good. It performed well and produced very good accuracy in both my Brit and my mini 14. Velocity spreads were within instrument error almost, like plus minus 3fps. I didn't measure enough shots to get the true deviation. I wondered whether it was modeled on 4320.

IMR 4320 was the first powder I used to reload my 22-250 shells in 1972. Great accuracy and it metered well from my tablespoon into the RCBS scale. The accuracy beat the expensive factory ammo($5/20) by a significant margin and the fragrance of the burnt powder was nice. I last used it for cast loads in 30-30 a couple of years back and it worked great there, too. I have six pounds of Varget in reserve, but 4320 will hold a place in my memories as long as I have memories.
One of my favorites . Fortunately I have a little over 16 pounds so I won't be out any time soon .

I have one can bought in the very early 70's. Price was $3.50 bought from a shop in MA. I have never used it in any cartridge I have loaded.so I do not miss it at all is that a bad thing?
