    8 mag

I started building a 8mm mag on a m70 receiver but i think i may abandon that idea if i can find one for a good price. I see em on the net but i haven't seen one in a local store in quite a while thats the reason for the m70 conversion. The safari grade m70 is notched so the longer cartridges can be ejected but im really not thrilled about doing this modification on a perfectly good gun that was chambered in 7mm mag and nothing is wrong with it except a little blueing messed up from fire fighters hosing it down when we lost our place a few years ago. Another option is find just a receiver and start from the ground up i know of a smith in kila (waksupi may know the guy) who will turn a bbl then id have to find a stock and a few other pieces. I know they never were popular but neither was i so its befitting that i would like this cartridge. A ole friend of mine has one and i always liked em for longer shots . Please chime in on which option you would take

    1 convert m70 7 mag action i already own
2 find a older used 8mm mag from the net and ship it
3 start with a receiver and piece it together

I had a bdl in 8 mag. If your serious about it i think i still have the dies and you can have them. But if your still procrastinating id rather give them to someone that actually needs them. It was my brother in laws gun who died in a car wreck in his mid 30s. I had it for many years and when his daughter grew up and had a baby boy i gave it to her for a wedding shower gift. Killed probably 20 deer with that gun doing crop damage shooting. Kind of an over kill for that but we dont have any animals that are big enough to deserve its power around here.

Very fast and sharp recoil. I had one at the same time as a .358 Norma and a .375 H&H and it was the harshest of the three from the bench. That said it killed Mule deer and Elk like magic. You need a true .375 length action to be proper so I'd look for a Remington 700.

I always thought there were not enough well constructed bullets to favor it over the 338 WM. I am now at the age where a custom rifle that close to a factory available one just doesn't quite do it. If you need more speed, acquaintances down in the Ruby Valley are using the 338 378 Weatherby with success.

200 gr Nosler Partition, Sierra and Hornady 220 grains, Swifts, Barnes. Bullets are not a problem at all for the 8mm Magnum. It is a great cartridge.

i owned a 340wby and have shot a 378wby. the 340 is a substantial higher level of recoil then an 8. Its about like comparing the 8 to a 300 win mag. The 378? Well lets just say its not for the casual shooter.

God bless you. A .338 is all I can stand and not for many shots either. Load work up will not be fun.

my late friend had a 338 RUM in rem 700 with a laminated stock/limbsaver. he came to my range to shoot it, but first he says "go ahead and shoot it." well, i did. i hit exactly in middle of my target, but........you know when you touched off a shot. i rate the recoil to be about a 416 rigby. the 338 rum is one the rifles that you shoot a group(3 - 5x) and you put it away for the next day. i think at the time it was $99 for 20 factory loaded cartridges(?).

i have a 98 mauser in 8x57 and the only it shoots is cast(or will be, i have to finish the stock).

I know someone here who owns a 460wby but doesn't shoot it any more. He did take a bear with it some years ago shot it in the neck. when they cut the skin around the neck the head fell off

I saw an 8mm Mag at a gun show years ago. It was a very nice rifle. Then my little pea brain said, "And what the heck would you do with it?!" Walked away and a few tables down found a Browning 78 in 6mm that came home with me.

And the story goes that the reason he did not shoot it again is that the shooters head also fell off on the way home with his trophy!

If more horsepower is what you are looking for would you be able to turn that 7mm Mag into a 338 Mag?

My pea brain didn't get as far as yours and so I have a nice Ruger 416 Mag. I must say, though, that even with the 400gr solids the recoil is not that bad. Even my 110lb wife has shot it a few times and shrugged.
460 Wtby. God bless anyone that can handle that
