Preferences for pistol hunting

What is the preference for hunting boolits(deer, mostly, but black bear isn't out of the picture)? Hardcasts, soft solids, or hollowpoints.

RCBS 45 270 SAA (did i say that right?) 50-50-2% alloy. Did a nice job on a big doe at 20 yds. Crow hopped about 30 ft. and dropped.

I dont do any hard cast. The other 2 kinda depends, caliber, distance, other. Now bear I would chose a .4?? with a nice flat nose and ductile alloy, but it is academics since I have never bear hunted. That just from experiences shooting deer with som HP bullets. Please post a bit more info, also how you like to hunt.

Soft solid flatnosed. Caliber that starts with a "4" throwing around a half-ounce of lead, or more, having a meplat larger than 60% of bullet diameter, at subsonic velocity around 900-1000 fps from a 5-1/2" barrel. A classic, simple solution still works with either black or smokeless and which over the last 50 years has killed multple pickup loads of game ranging in size from sika deer, whitetails and hogs to 1 black bear and 1 moose.

Lee 310 medium soft over some stiff H110 for the .44 mag. Otherwise, a .35 Herrett does a good job.

.45 Colt 270 grain rnfp hp using a soft alloy @ 1100fps worked GREAT on my first handgun buck this last November. Alloy was 25 to 1, with a smidge of antimony from soww. Accurate and soft shooting! No changes for next year planned. hc18flyer

Nothing spectacular, nuisance animals that were tearing stuff up at the cabin where I lived in big woods at the time, so I used the gun I had with me, which is usually the case. Moose in rut repeatedly charging the Jeep and bear later trying to break into the barn where the moose quarters were hanging. Both ate good and were shared with my neighbors.

44 mag, 240gr JHP, 24gr H110/w296 has always worked great.
I would like to try my 503 Keith bullets, but why mess with success

A 280gr. or so LBT in .44 mag. or 300gr. plus in .454 Casull, alloy would depend on the game hunted and the velocity, but use tin in your mix, either way LBT designs are the ticket.

I personally have 2 types of pistols a revo and a single shot hand cannon
for the holstered pistol I like open sights and a 255 gr Keith boolit (44 mag)
and for the hand cannon (475 Linebaugh)I prefer a scoped gun and a 385 gr boolit
alloy for both is in the neighborhood of 16-1
prefer the revo for walkin around and the 475 for stand hunting

Here is my recipe for deer-250gr Lyman 429421 SWC cast from clip on wheel weight (or equivalent) with 2% tin, air cooled and powder coated. I load them to to about 1200 fps and they will shoot through a Buick! I have never killed a bear but I have a friend who carries a 44 hog hunting and for him I load a 270 gr Noe SWC cast from the same alloy and powder coated. It runs about 1200 fps also and he says it will shoot completely through both shoulders of a 200 lb hog, which is a pretty tough customer. I don't know the BNH of the mix and don't care--it works. One of the great things about cast boolits is, you don't have to run them at bazooka speeds to get the job done. BTW, my gun is a 9 1/2" SRH Ruger and I can get 1200 fps with a lot less powder(2400) than if it was a 4 or 6" gun. My 250rg load is with 16.6 grs of 2400.

My handgun deer boolits are either wheelweight or 50/50, flat meplat, 900 to 1300 fps, 250 to 275 gr in weight, .44 or 45 caliber. Been working for me for many years.

It depends on what I am hunting, for squirrels and rabbits, a Ruger MK III Hunter .22 lr, for deer and hogs, a Ruger SBH 5 1/2" barrel .45 Colt, 255 grain RNFP, over a case load of Trail Boss.....

7mm-08, SSP 91 with iron sights with a Dan Wesson model 15 .357 mag on the hip for backup. 150gr Nosler ballistic tips on the 7mm-08 and 158gr PC cast in the DW.

I use for deer, home made cast soft points. Hps or cup points. Many are pc'd. Tenn says use an expanding bullet, hence my choice.
