475 linebaugh/480 ruger

I just had my local ffl order a BFR in 475 linebaugh.

Anyone have any experience with these rounds?

Sizing and mould recommendations?

I asked Tom at Accurate Molds modify a design already in his catalog and he came up with the 48-395BG. The throats in my gun slug at .477 and I size the boolit the same. It shoots like a rifle with a near max load of H110 and a Federal magnum pistol primer for about 1385 fps.

I had a .480 and used an RCBS mold that I sized the boolits to .476. It had a 2x Leupold and a clay pigeon @ 100 measured yards offhand was not a challenge. It also was not nearly as violent or vicious as the .454 that I had. Mine was a Ruger Super Redhawk.

So far, the only mold I have for that cartridge is the MiHec 477-640 GC HP which so far has been a great mold. It drops @ 392-4 with the large HP pins. I run a midrange 475 load with 14.0-.5 grains of HS6. I haven't really pushed the boolit hard and contemplating my decision for the GC mold. I'm sizing on a RCBS Lam ll with their .476 die and have had no problems chambering in my FA chambers.

I forgot, I also have a Lee 475325 GC WFN mold that I'm getting ready to try out too. Got some loaded, just need to try them. I think they are dropping at 340 checked and lubed ready to load.

Older BFR .475 L shooter, also size .476 and use the HS 6 load mentioned by Greg S. Looked at the catalog page for the Accurate 48-395BG, what a great looking bullet. Sage Outdoors has a readily available supply of Gator Gas Checks at a good price. Shipping charges are always very reasonable. Currently shooting a plain base design, Accurate 48-420B. This bullet shoots very good groups at 100M. Just received a MP 477640 350 grain H.P. G.C. group buy design. Miha has overruns available on his website.

.425 nose length to crimp groove, on the Accurate designs, leaves about .050 clearance on a loaded round to the end of the cylinder. (475 Linebaugh case).

Yes. I've taken 7 whitetails with this gun/load combination.

I have a older one before they started drilling and tapping the top strap. I put their micarta grips on it. They are easier for short fingers but also wider and spread the recoil better. I also had the barrel cut 5.5 the 7.5 felt very nose heavy and awkward. Now It is very nicely balanced and the velocity loss was negligible. It is freakishly accurate with 420 Lfn and a 405 wfn. Even a light charge of trail boss is accurate to 25yds with either bullet.

Look at Lead Bullet Technology LBT he makes fantastic bullet molds for the 475 Linebaugh. One of my favorite loads for the Linebaugh is 11 grains of unique with 405 grain WFN

I thought BFR's were the big monster .45-70 Revolvers?

They make a standard length receiver and long receiver for the larger cartridges like .30-30, .45-70, .444 etc...

I have my revolver. Moulds, brass, etc ordered.

I am not finding too much data for lower end loads. Would it not be safe to load 480 data into 475 cases......assuming the obvious and not "down loading" powders like 296/110. My objective fornthis gun is primarily deer loads with the capability of taking Nilgai with top end loads every once in a blue moon

I have no experience with the 475 but I own and load for the 480.

From my experience downloading the 44 Mag in Mag cases I would be surprised if you could not also down load the 475 sufficiently. As you noted powders such as H110/WW296 excepted.

After much studying and consideration of my limited knowledge, I just ordered this mould from Accurate.

I am going to keep loads a tad slower if the gun likes it.

What about it didn't work for you may I ask? I am scared to death of not gas checking this caliber. I got the cheapie lee 475 400 rf and am half scare to load any up for fear of leading the heck out of everything. Lots of pressure with this round.

I cut a gas check shank on that Lee plain base bullet in my drill press and they didn't shoot half bad so I ordered the mold you did. It's been a darn good bullet for me. A friend powder coated some of them for me and it didn't make any difference. If you think you may shoot much above mid-range power, I'd gas check to make sure. A little extra effort and expense wasn't an issue for me.

Me neither. I'm guessing you are speaking of 44man?

I learned a bunch from the guy, but in some instances, I didnt agree. This would be one of them.

I will try the plain base at lower levels, but I dont have High hopes!
