    Powdered Graphite as a Lube

    The stuff is slick.

Doing some research and I ran across some ads from 1908 promoting graphite as a bullet lube. I don't recall seeing it mentioned here in older threads. Is it viable or has better and less messy components made it unnecessary.

Years back I had a lube recipe that called for graphite, also grease & beeswax.

Never made it as I got of it from the old guy. It worked well for pistol loads but was a bit soft.

I have some factory jacketed rifle bullets that are coated in graphite.
Think they are Winchester but not sure.

    Maybe they are.
They are tucked away in some other boxes but I will probably run across them some time soon.

I don't see why spray graphite wouldn't work but I think it would be cost-prohibitive.

After lubing with either lubamatic or BLL, I finish up by dusting the lubed bullets in motor mica.

I ran across several cans of Frankford Arsenal Drop out.
I use it for bullet lube then lube with regular bullet lube.
Sounds redundant but gets a bit more velocity with out leading.

Idk about how well it would work, but you can get really small quantities at the box stores marketed for lubing door locks. The local John Deere dealership has it at $5 for a 1 pound bottle

The problem with using graphite in a wax based lube is that you have to keep stirring it as it cools to maintain the particles being held in suspension.

I just read an article from the 50s, in which the author (Col. Townsend Whelan ? I think?) discussed using graphite. He spoke of mixing it in grease 50/50 by weight, to make a (very) soft lube.

I would think some added beeswax would be helpful.
