350 Remington Mag. my favorite cast bullet shooter

I did a search on this site to see if anyone beside me was using the 350 RM for cast bullets and couldn't find any threads so will start one and see if anyone else has tried it. My rifle is an old Rem. model 600, yes with shark fin sight, vent rib and striped stock that most gun writers like to criticize but that fine with me I'll just keep shooting her and appreciate how she handles with the 18 inch barrel. The bullet I use is the RCBS 200 grain FN GC. I cast them pretty hard with half COWW and half Linotype with a little pewter tossed in. I size them .359, Hornady GC and LBT blue lube and load them to top groove and apply tight crimp. All I have killed so far is paper but deer season will be here soon. I'd have to say that all you need now is a sharp skinning knife! Don't let anyone tell you that belted magnums will not shoot cast boolits. My 350 Rem shot them about like yours but now it's a 358 Norma mag and still shoots them great. Those little 600 Rems like yours were a woods hunters gift, no matter what the gun scribes said. At what range did you shoot those groups?

I've thought of a .350 for my son for cast. Works in a short 700 action, correct?

Those groups were shot from a bench rest at 100 yards. The 350 RM is for a short action rifle though some gun writers have expressed an opinion that it should be in a standard length so as to seat bullets out farther. I prefer them just as they are short, light and powerful. This rifle also shoots J bullets as good and maybe a little better than cast.

My brother had a 700 Classic in .350 RM and it was a great rifle/cartridge combo. The goober traded it for a Beretta o/u before I got a chance to swindle him out of it! The 600s are probably one of the most accurate factory rifles ever. And dang handy, too.

Everything about that rifle/cartridge combination should make a great cast boolit gun. I recently sold some brass and was amazed at how quickly it sold. The nearly new die set was another story! Still has not sold.

I really like the old 600 Remingtons. I have a 222 a 6mm a 308 and the 350 and all are good shooters. When I hunt in the woods they are perfect from a ladder stand or ground blind with their short barrels, but over bean fields I usually carry something different. Lately that has been a 257 WBY.

I have a Custom Model 7 350 Remington built by Broughton. I am ashamed to say it has been neglected since I bought it. Gent had it built about 10-12 years ago and never fired it either. I got it for a song,making with some brass and a bunch of ammo.
I have formed up some brass and loaded it with some fire forming loads.

Don't think you need any pewter in your alloy. Plenty of tin in the linotype.

I had a factory 6.5 rem mag made in the late 60's on the short action 700 rem. but traded it for an artillery luger(bad move), and they also made a 350 mag. then. I have one of the classics in 350, along with a 600 and a 673 in 350mag. Haven't shot cast thru them yet.

Heck, my DAD was shooting cast in his .375 Weatherby 60yrs ago, great at busting Jackrabbits. Used a LYMAN #375248 with either UNIQUE or 2400. Can't remember which. We busted Jacks with every kind of rifle or handgun we owned. Always cast; light loads in the rifles, any & every kind of load in the handguns.
He said once your rifle was sighted in at the range, busting jacks was the BEST HUNTING PRACTICE there was.

I've been shooting the old IDEAL # 3589 in my .35 Whelan for 30yrs. My REM model 660 was only in .308. Wish I could get one in .350 REM MAG.
I really lost out when they brought it out in the Model Seven, couldn't find one.

Although I really like the short 600 Remington rifles, I built my 350 on a long action Ruger 77 tang safety model that was a 7 mm mag to start with. It may be just me but Ruger seems to have made a bazillion 77 tang safety guns in 7mag so finding one is pretty easy, around my parts, at least. I sent the barrel to Douglas and they duplicated the taper of the factory barrel and made it 22" long. It made life a LOT easier when seating 250 gr Noslers just off the lands plus I could get a few more grains of powder in the short case. If I had it to do over, I would have made the barrel 20" long and put sights on it but that's a story for another day. I would advise anybody that takes this route to order the barrel with a 1-14 twist instead of the 1-16 that Remington uses.
Now with all that said, RangerDan will get by just fine with his rifle and especially his cast load. Like I posted earlier, all he really needs is a sharp skinning knife! Good work Dan.
