Picked up a Colt Trooper MK III. I do have a question I bet one of you can answer: according to online research, the MK III was introduced in 1969. However, according to Colts online tool, by serial number it was manufactured in 1961. Can anyone explain? Thanks

Last weekend I purchased a 1981 (the year I graduated HS) Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. I've wanted one since I was in my mid-teens (40 years ago). When I saw it on the S&S forum at a reduced price...I just had to. I'm traveling this week...so I hope my FFL gives me a call before I get home Friday night. I'm looking forward to getting it in my hot hands. My first 35 cal rifle...I'm pumped to say the least.

Wow...Reverend Al....that's a beautiful Savage 99 you got there. I love the square lever on the straight stock. Its just like the 1899 303 Sav. that I have. Its really got a nice look compared to the curved oval ones that the pistol grip stocks came with.

I don't have much on the serial number thing. Could the frame be from an earlier model and it was rebarreled with a Trooper III barrel? Just a WAG as I have no idea how to tell frames apart.

Had another .22 HP take down carbine just like it years ago, but sold it in a weak moment and always regretted it. The good news is that I kept the dies, brass, and 2 boxes of the now hard to find .227" Hornady 70 grain spire point bullets when I sold the first carbine. Looking forward to getting out to shoot this one ...

Just picked up a Remington 788 in 308 Win. All original (hardwood stock) except missing the rear sight. Had one of these back in the day in 6mm Rem and never should have let it go. Also had a really beat up one in 22-250 that was so accurate it was boring. Looking forward to trying the 308 with some 311291's.

While I can't vouch for Colts I suspect that the same applies as to S&W .
The 1937 Brazilian is the same pistol as the 1917 so much so that a portion of the 1937 contract was fulfilled with 1917 parts and commercial parts . In deep research its not unusual to find a model with SN that run from 23287 to 29873 and 17521, 17538, and 16721 for 19?? production because Joe down on line 7 pulled special orders from January till June of the year before and was the line apprentice the 2 yr before and only finished fit and assembly of 1.5 guns a day so he ended up with new SN frames burying his older frames by his 4th year he was faster and doing over 3/day and often 5-6 when things really flower smooth as a result he was clearing all of the bins and there were a few older frames still in there .

It's possible that Colts was still using up 80% WWII frames in 1960 also so catching a 61' frame in a 1965 gun isn't a real stretch . John on line 6 may have had a hord of fat , skinny , Monday , Friday or exceptionally nice frames set back for Tom over in engraving or for nickle plate .

Back in the days of hand fitted everything these situations aren't really the exception in fact it's almost rule .

That brings back memories. My first rifle was a Remington 581, bought in 1966 for a paltry $45, from Yellow Front in Phoenix. Yep, I was only 13 and it took my dad a couple of months to convince my mom I should be able to own a gun (she hated guns until the day she died). That was money from mowing lawns most of the summer ($2 per lawn, $5 if the yard was big).

Both my kids learned to shoot with it. Now a friend's grandson has it and it is his first gun.

Oh interesting. I learn something new everyday! Very plausible that it explains my pistol. I’m almost tempted to shell the $70 for the history check with S&W but it’s a pretty steep price just to satisfy curiosity.
