Suggest a deer call for me.

I am new to calls. I want a doe call, and a grunt call. Please suggest.

This is my first time back on the site since moving over a year ago. Thought I would answer anyway. I have pretty much given up on calls. They freeze up, they get in the way of bowstrings, and they bang on things. I have been very successful just using my voice. It doesn't always work but it is always where I can find it. I called in my first P&Y buck last fall doing just that. He was 50 yards out and going the wrong way. When I doe bleated him, he turned around so fast I did not have time to get buck fever. He gave me an 8 yard broadside and dropped 30 yards away. Best to try it on deer you can see that are going somewhere else. it will allow you to gauge their mood and reaction. They may ignore you but I have never spooked one.Click image for larger version.

I haven't called any deer in, mostly because I hunt by a travel corridor. I have killed 3 nice bucks by grunting with my voice, to stop them. One was the one on my avatar. He scored 165 pts non typical.

Thanks for the replies. Id like to learn to mimic the calls. In fact, a member here sent me a buck grunt, and i've been working on imitating it. We have deer all over our farm, in the yard even, so I can practice on them. Course, they dont spook easy from us, so it might not help me practice much.

Both lures at each place. i get does and bucks with them.I had a buck stop in its run because it smell the lures. I got that buck also.Just to give a idea to who want a different idea. My brother did use a caller and call in does years ago.

I remember a cartoon in the sports section one hunting season. A hunter is sitting on a stump whispering - `Bambi, it`s me Thumper`! Now that`s a deer call.Robert

We generally rattle antlers around here. Brings in the big ones when rut is in season.

A mouth call for a turkey hen (the one that goes poot), will also bring them in out of curiosity.

I have used a "K"MEER DEER" call by Lohman. Sometimes it works and sometimes the deer don't pay any attention at all.

I don' t know if they even make it anymore.

I have also used an Olt model R-25 deer call. It has worked at times.

I like an adjustable call. I typically leave it on doe as it draws bucks better, IMO. Unless the buck thinks he's king of the woods, he will walk away from a buck grunt and watch it happen several times. Blow a buck grunt and they immediately turn and walk away. Then a doe grunt and make a 180 and come right at you. Over half the time they just flat out ignore it and focused on scent of one they were already tailing. It works on ones actively seeking one to follow and tail gate. Once they start tailing one, its like they go deaf and have blinders.

My old hunting buddy used to put doe scent on his boot heels when walking in the woods; one day he turned around seeing a cougar looking at him from 25 yds away!

    I'm gonna try this one.........
“You should tell someone what you know. There should be a history, so that men can learn from it.

He smiled. “Men do not learn from history. Each generation believes itself brighter than the last, each believes it can survive the mistakes of the older ones. Each discovers each old thing and they throw up their hands and say ‘See! Look what I have found! Look upon what I know!’ And each believes it is something new.
