Lyman 429348 180 gr WC load

Hi everyone, first post here,

I am looking for a load for my 44spl, I have a couple of hundred sized and lubed 180 grain wad cutters (Lyman 429348) at home and no load data.

Just looking for a nice easy target load, I have quite a few powders but need a place to start.

Accurate arms has OLD data listed for a 190gr WC HERE
I've used their Nitro-100 and AA#2 data with Penn Bullets, .44 Caliber 185 Grain Double Bevel Base Wadcutter .
I would contact Accurate Arms and verify that the old data is still viable:

Is this the boolit you have?
Since this wadcutter style has a nose,I'd bet that any SWC/RN/TC data you find would work for plinking loads.

I fooled with this boolit briefly in a 10" Contender in .44 mag. using Trailboss powder. It shot poorly for me until velocity got up there. I believe I started with 5 grains and went up 1/2 gr. at a time.

I was looking for a quiet small game load, but couldn't get it with this combo. My last 5 shot group with a near 100% load density combination went into .75" at 50 yds. Not quiet though. Let us know how you make out.

I shoot a WC in my 44 that I made by shaping a plug to place in the nose section of a SWC design that is in fact H&G #503. The WC coming out of this arrangement is a flat faced, has one lube groove and weighs 180 grains. I load it with 5.3 to 5.5grains of Unique depending on whether I shoot it out of my 6 inch or 7 3/8 inch barrel. The recoil is not sharp and the accuracy is good, a 1" group at 25 yards. Quiet I guess depends on who is listening. Good shooting LLS

I have the Lyman 45th, I just was kind of leery of it, especially the Unique load of 7 grains as a starting point, that seems pretty hot for a WC.
I forgot to ask, where would you crimp this boolit?

I just crimped over the slight shoulder it has above the top drive band. Seated like this, there really isn't that much boolit in the case. Pressures shouldn't be any higher than any equal bearing surface boolit, seated to the same depth.

I load a 200 gr. RF boolit in .44 mag for a fellow at the club, using 7 grs. of Unique. It's not a gallery load, but this fellow has bad arthritis, and loves to shoot it. Very mild.

I just loaded up 450 rounds of 44 special with 7.5 gr of 4756 using a Hensley & Gibbs 107B, 185 gr wadcutter. It actually weighs 180 in my alloy. This is a nice mild target load. Smells good too... I load 8 gr when in magnum cases.
I really like 4756.

I have had great success with #429348 in several .44 Spl handguns. I'll size mine to .430", and seat with a light crimp over 5.5gr of 'BULLSEYE'. I will also minimally expand and flare the case mouth; I believe that a very firm grip upon the bullet, without having to apply a heavy crimp, aids in uniform combustion. Wheelweight metal seems to work best.
Dad finds this load shoots very well out of his Taurus 441 (?); the light bullet works well with it's low front sight. My older Charter Arms 'Bulldog' also likes this load.
Sammy's posting above jibes with my earlier Lyman data; 'UNIQUE' powder also works well for me.

The difference is that bullet wt. is reduced and thus it's not comparable to say a 240 or 250 more standard boolit range.

Loads using wadcutters that are cast are usually quite a bit different than what you normally see for swaged hollow base wadcutters. The bullets are considerably stronger, and can take that added pressure with no problem. There is also no concern about "blowing out the skirt" like there is with hollow base swaged bullets.

I just found one of these #429348 CW molds and a pointy #429303 that looks like it's never been used (price was so ridiculously low I couldn't resist)... Have a shiny new Redhawk 4.2" .44 and am lookin to make up some spl. loads. The Redhawk is destined for some 300+ gn magnum monsters. Anyone have any more current loads to add since the last posting here in 2008? Any COL data for either of these in a spl or magnum case? Have lots of H110, 2400 and IMR 4227... Just now seeing regular Large pistol primers for the first time in 2+ years locally. Have been using CCI LMP for everything... (.45, .41, .44 , 10mm ... with minor adjustments and chrono) Probably will just use liquid ALOX. My lead is kept on the harder side for bigger, FN bullets.
