Starting load for MP 434640 .44 Special

Does anyone have experience with the Mihec 434640 in .44 Special? I've got three new guns, two Blackhawks and a GP100. Is the Skeetet load a good starting point for this boolit? I've got 231, Unique, 2400 and 296. I don't want to got rod it, but I'd like a moderately stiff load and I'll be trying to find something accurate. These boolits had the large round HP pin and I lubed them with White Label BAC. They weigh 255 grains.

I shoot piles of 44 Special... 5.1grs of 231 makes great plinking loads in my guns. For the stiffer loads, it is the Skeeter load with Unique. However, I have found that 8.0grs of Power Pistol and the 429421 gets the same performance as the Skeeter...with less pressure and it seems to have a little less recoil. My preference for the Special is the 429421 bullet, but honestly, I have never shot a bullet in any of my 8 44 Special revolvers, that was not accurate.

My standard .44 Special Load is 6.0 gr of W231 with the 429421 boolit. It would probably perform similarly with the 429640 boolit as it is the same weight and only the actual profile is different. The powder charge doesn't know that the bullet is a different shape, all it knows is it is the same weight.

6.0 W231 is just short of the Skeeter Load. Any thing above 5.0 gr would work and speeding it up is just a matter of getting the gun to shoot to the sights.

The slower loads will generally shoot high as the boolit spends more time in the barrel under Recoil, thus the high POI. As you increase the powder charge the POI will come down and get closer to the sights. When they're dead on at 25 you're done and that becomes your load for that gun.

However you will probably find that it works for a variety of guns that are similar in nature IE: similar barrel lengths.

No! Skeeter's load is NOT a "starting point" - it is an ending point. I doubt that any published, named load is a 'starting point', it is where an experienced loader ended up after a lot of experimentation.

For pure accuracy, I find that I shoot the top Lyman Load of 6.9 grains of Unique slightly better than the Skeeter Load. However, I have found Red Dot, Power Pistol, Bullseye and WW-231 to produce very good to outstanding results with the Keith boolit.

5.5 grains of Red Dot is excellent, 5.8 grains of WW-231 works well. somewhere between 7.5 and 8.0 grains of Power Pistol will be a sweet spot. 4.5 grains of Bullseye was also pretty good. 15.5 grains of 2400 also showed promise, but I prefer to save my 2400 for other uses. It doesn't seem to grow on trees.

For a starting load, I'd try 6.5 grains of Unique, 5.2 grains of Red Dot, 5.5 grains of WW231 or 7.5 grains Power Pistol.
