Winchester 92 in 25-20

Made a trip to the hardware store this morning to pick up a couple things and made a pass by the gun counter and saw this rarely seen Winchester. I knew the price was going to be out of my budget but I had to look anyway. The gun metal has the old patina that older guns have, stock was not all beat up but just the normal nicks and dents, the screws were not all buggered up, the action was still nice and tight and the bore looked good as best I could see without a bore light. This gun has not been molested by its previous owner. The only down side was the price tag, $1695.00. I'm just curious if this price is just ridiculous out of line. I would have to sell a few guns to be able to afford this one gun.

Locally, patina'd .25 & .32 cal Winchester Model 92's with wood that has multiple "handling marks" (nicks/dents/etc) sell for $750-$800 (.38 & .44 cal M-92's will bring 2X the money smallbores do).

I paid 450 for my rifle with octagon barrel and about 300 for the carbine.
the carbine someone done some carving on the stock, but it come with a set of marbles peep sights [shrug]
easy peasy to get it to shoot cast too.

I have 3 or 4 Win 92s in 25-20.

They come in various states:
1) Original barrel, rotten bore, good headpace
2) Winchester replacement barrel for gunsmiths ~1920, perfect bore, headspace too tight.
3) Winchester replacement barrel for gunsmiths ~1920, perfect bore, headspace too loose.

Then there is the firing pin to firing pin hole fit:
1) Tight. Go for 50k psi loads
2) Loose eroded mess from pierced primers. 22kpsi may be the threshold for pierced primers with CCI 450 small rifle magnum primers with the thick cup.

I get the best accuracy if a make a clamp so I can attach a pistol scope to the barrel.

Necking down 32-20 to 25-20 is a process to be learned.

If I could only find one at the $450.00 price tag. I thought the asking price was outrageous. Maybe some day.

Today I visited a gun shop in central Ohio and found a Winchester 1892 SRC in 25-20. I looked thru the bore with a bore light and it appears to be at least a 9 out of 10 with 10 being mint. Price was $ 1099.00 but I believe that can be negotiated lower. serial # 999312 (approx. 1928). NO saddle ring other wise nice.

I haven't had a chance to pick up any 92s lately. With 25/20 & 32/20 the bores seem to be the
biggest problem. I have looked at some nice guns with terrible bores. Most all 92s I encounter
are small bores, they were once popular in my area, do it all farm guns. I have picked up a 53
in good exterior shape, but the kicker was the bore, the best one I have ever seen on a used
25/20 of any feather. I also have a Marlin 94 octagon, rifle. It is very nice exterior, bore is brown.
I beat the guy down to $350 on it, because of bore. Turns out that it didn't hurt the shooting.
I have owned a lot of 25/20 & 32/20 rifles & revolvers, every one of them shot a lot better with
cast bullets.

20 years ago, the '92's were so cheap and we thought they must be junk! I just bought this 1909 vintage 38WCF with full mag for $US500 which is good by US standards. The bore is 9/10 and it doesn't shoot badly at 50 yards.

When was that? Way under priced in the new age of internet. I was a dealer and in the 1990's 450??? still way low

Price does seem a bit high, my latest 92 in 38WCF was only a bit more and probably in similar condition. Next trip put your bore light in your pocket and take a better look, shop may have a bit of bargaining room. I sold one in 32WCF for about half that, finish was 60-70% but bore was a bit too rough for me, couldn't get her to shoot. I'm not a fan of the 25WCF mainly because I'm invested in the 32WCF. It's a sweet little plinking caliber that's easy on the powder and lead supply. Without pics or a serial number it's hard to say for sure but I'm inclined to think they're a bit high on this rifle unless it's an unusual configuration.

I got a 1904 model 92 in 38-40 in 2013 for $800 with minty original bore.
I can't find deals like that in 25-20,32-20, or 44-40.

The Marlin Owners web site under 25-20 thread has excellent information about cast & jacket boolit loads. Well worth the time to read. Especially if you are interested in hunting edible small game.

I just recently bought a '92 SRC in .25-20 WCF with a very good (but not perfect) bore for $800 Canadian and thought it was a fair price. Been looking for one for quite a while and finally lucked out. No luck finding dies at our big 2 day gun show last weekend, so I'll have to keep looking. A vendor at the show had 3 full boxes of the old (red and yellow boxes so likely '60's vintage?) of Winchester factory .25-20 ammunition ... but he wanted $75.00 per box of 50! (I passed on them at that price.) I'll keep watching for brass while I keep watching for a set of dies and if worse comes to worse I'll try reforming some of my .32-20's after annealing and in several gentle steps.

Remington recently did a run of 25-20 ammo and they seem to be priced anywhere from $59 to $75. Luckily I've still got a fair amount of brass and a bullet mold.

The last W-W 25-20 ammo I've seen for sale was about a year ago at a local gunshop for $72 per box of 50. This caliber is ridiculously expensive because of the limited supply and demand.
Midway currently has a new Lyman 3 die set for US $ 47, which makes reloading this caliber very cost effective - about 8¢ per round once the brass has been acquired.
