First kill with one of my bullets.

I used a rifle for my private land only cow tag this year, it has been a long time. Usually I use my bow, but this year I wanted to use a lever gun.
I have an 1895 in 405, but not an original. I have some casting equipment and have shot some of my own bullets, but I have too many hobbies to get very deep into casting. But, my 405 shoots ok with as cast tumble lubed 300gr round nose bullets. I had 15 primed brass ready to go and a handful of bullets sitting there. So, I loaded 3 and check the zero and accuracy. They worked well enough so I loaded 12 more and headed out into the woods, within a half hour I had a cow standing broadside at 50 yards. One shot and she was done. The 300gr bullet had destroyed the onside shoulder and punched a gaping hole through the heart, stopping just under the hide on the far side.
It was the first kill for that rifle, and the first bullet I cast used to kill something.

Too bad the hunt was over so quick!

winchester85 Congratulations on your cow elk cast boolit kill. Your hunt sounded like everything worked just as it should. The 405 is a very fine cartridge and your shooting platform is classic to that round. I have never used that particular combination for a cast boolit kill, but I have shot several whitetails and one black bear with my own cast boolits. I'll tell you that for me at least using one of my own cast boolits makes the hunt even more special. So enjoy the good feeling that comes with it. I try to use a cast boolit every season here and I can truly say they have never let me down. Nice job and thanks for the good write-up.

Wonderful, you now have the Force. I predict more casting and falling into the fold here.

Good job and congrats on your first CB kill! I seldom hunt with anything but my own cast boolits, for me there's nothing better.

All my emotions are mirrored in the prior posts. I hope this is the start of a long relation!
I can walk out my door to hunt Deer. It must be as good to have Elk as close as you do. Kevin

    Congrats!!
Nothing like the feeling of taking an animal with your 1st cast boolit, not only that but from a cartridge highly favoured by Teddy Roosevelt!

    Congratulations Winchester85!!!!!!!!!!!

I just took my 3rd elk this past Wed., 6:30am with my 45/70 and a 465gr Wide Flat Nose cast bullet.

Add those to my growing pile of deer and to say that I am impressed with my results is an understatement.

Wish I'd started down the cast boolit and 45/70 road years earlier.

Now that you've been there and done that, maybe you should make it a regular occurrence.

Just to keep the folks asking for pictures happy, I'll attach one of the Ol'Coot and his critter.

    Again, Congrats!!!!!!!! Well done.

Congrats as well. The satisfaction of using your own-crafted ammunition to do a kill is priceless.

that's a special technique we use in Idaho.
the hard part is sneaking up behind them with the 4 wheeler.
hiking around in a wide circle to get on the other side so they tip over onto the ramp is the critical part of our success or failure..
