I did once when I was 10. My eyebrows have grown back since then, and my ears have kinda stopped ringing. My father strongly discouraged any further ballistic experimentation!

There is a huge thread on how to make black powder on this forum. So I'd wager at least a few of us have dabbled in the dark arts...

I make my own. I use the CIA Field Expedient Method. That manual is probably not in print anymore, I got it in the early 80's. However, that way of making black powder is covered in detail in the BP section.

I made a batch years ago using chicken litter to get the main ingredient and figure its far cheaper to buy it. it is nice to know I can do it but what a lot of work. been acquiring the ingredients commercially and one of these days I may try that route.

I make mine, I need to make a bigger ball mill for my mixing. I also saw a ball mill that had screen sides and used pool balls to break up the pressed pucks. I'd like to make one of those too, it sure would help with the corning.

    Not at all.

The last time I bought sulfur and potassium nitrate, I got it from Duda Diesel. They had the best prices and it's much better potassium nitrate than what you get when you buy stump remover.

LOL!!! Ural, having been an electrician for just shy of 40 years I enjoyed your post. Wise man.

I did make some BP about the same 40 years ago. As my knowledge of electricity and BP has increased considerably maybe I should try some more "magic" of the black variety....

50 pound bag of KNO3 $24 at the farm COOP. I inject it into my irrigation system.

Just a heads up for those who make their own Black Powder, ATF has a bad habit of arbitrarily changing it's mind about what you can and can't do. I'm only posting this for informations sake, I'm not a lawyer.

In a 2001 ATF new letter they said:
"Keep in mind individuals do not need a manufacturers license if they are manufacturering for personal, non-business use."
From the bottom of page 2 at this link:
    https://www.atf.gov/file/56586/download

In a June 2014 ATF Tech Branch letter they said:
"because the exception only applies to certain intended uses by the consumer, persons engaged in the business of manufacturing...must be licensed..."
You can read the whole letter at this link:
    https://www.atf.gov/explosives/docs/...owder/download

Now the key wording here might be the "Business" of manufacturing but I always tread carefully when it comes to the ATF. One time they say things are okay, the next time they kick in the door, shoot the dog, hold your wife and kids at gun point while they confiscate all your stuff.

I've made black powder myself many times and with good results so I'm just posting this information so others can make an informed desicion about what they are doing, it may or may not get them in trouble. As I said I'm not a lawyer...

Well I also make BP for my fireworks. I had never tried mine in muzzle loaders before.
When real BP got harder to find years back it lead me to start refining it for my guns.

I do have a license for making pyro fireworks & must comply with the ATF rules. I know
what you are saying about the ATF, but nothing we can do as far as big brother making
the rules. But as to date no one needs a license for making BP in small amounts but it
CAN NOT BE SOLD! they will come down on you big time.

It is a codified law passed by Congress and signed by a president that says making it for oneself doesn't require a license. The ATF has not one bit of wiggle room on this.
