Any idea what these are being reformed for?

I recently bought out the reloading stuff in a large estate, and these cases were in the lot. They are Winchester headstamps, and are stamped .356 Win. That being said, they are NOT .356 Win Cases, which is obvious. My first thought was that some boob had tried to make .356 Win. Brass in to .44 Magnum or .45 Colt, but the measurements are wrong. I have attached photos with measurements. Any ideas?

.454 crossed my mind as well, but they weren't in any of my lists of parent cases. I am all ears, however.

I was at a buddy's Sunday and he showed me a cut off 308 about that length he found in sorting out some brass . That would explain it , when I see him again ill mention the 44 auto mag .

Thanks for the insight. The thought that won't leave my head is that someone ruined good .356 Win. brass!!

Your's is something else.
Assume your mystery case is rimless "auto pistol brass"?
BUT - sometimes stuff gets reformed into rimmed revolver brass or?

Again, this brass looks to have started it's life as .356 Win. Brass, and has been formed up into something else. It's a mystery, to be sure.

It looks like a lengthened 44 mag (or shortened 445 as mentioned above). Its probably a wildcat for use in custom SA revolver.

Since nobody else has brought it up, I guess I will: How about a shot cartridge for a short cylindered .44 Special?

I don't know off hand how long the cylinders are for a Charter Arms Bulldog, but that is my guess.

I found a 44-06 in my illustrated Reference of Cartridge Dimension but it is only 1.285" long. Would make sense with the extra length if someone was trying to make shot cartridges.
