    .30-30 bullet wisdom

Now that I have a set of RCBS 180 FN blocks, I'll drum up some gas checks and get to work on pills for the old Marlin .30-30. Here's a question, though: I have SPG in my lubrisizer. Will it work well for cast and smokeless, or should I just tumble lube in Lee liquid alox? Also, what is your all-time favorite alloy for a hunting bullet at .30-30 vleocities? The one thing I don't have is a bunch of wheel weights, but I do have a lot of range scrap.
    Thanks for advice.

I have used SPG with smokeless loads in the 45-70 to around 1400fps with no ill effects. I've not yet tried tumble lube sionce I don't shoot the smaller calibers. Many of the guys here shoot WW for the 30-30, so I'd try for a similar hardness.

    1. Tumble lube with Lee Liquid Alox.

    2. Range scrap will probably give you a leaded barel at hunting velocities, i.e., 1700 + fps.

That bullet in ww alloy works well in my M94. I push it to 1900 fps with Varget.

I use that bullet made form range scrap from our indoor range. It is mostly 22 lr lead. I use 34 gr of IMR 4831 with RCBS Rifle Lube and a gas check and get 1860 fps. There is lots of unburned powder in the bore after I shoot a few of these. It doesn't seem to hurt accuracy so I just ignore it. I get no leading and I shoot it alot. I use this load for Cowboy Rifle Silhouette and get 3 inch groups at 200 meters with a reciever sight from a bench. Standing on my hind legs I don't doo quite so good.

I used this load to win the Idaho Cowboy Rifle Silhouette Championship and I also use it for hunting. My mold with this alloy produces a bullet of about 191 grains and it is pretty soft but again, I do not have any leading problems and I shoot several hundred rounds a month with this load. I do a good cleaning about once a month but have never seen any lead on my patches or in the bore.

Being basicly lazy and not wanting to empty a luber I tumble lubed some 31141's and then lube sized them with BP lube. They did just fine up to 2000 fps from my 94. Since the initial experiment I have used this same system to do bullets for several calibers and have had no leading up to 2100 fps. I was using w/w lead for most of these.

I've had good luck with this bullet with IMR 4064, and H335, hornady gas checks and Tamarack 50/50 lube to 1800 fps.
