An old Remington 700 still shoots

Took my .243 to the range yesterday, hadn't shot it in at least 30 years. Carried a few reloads, (not cast), and some factory loads. Some of the reloads were dated June 30, 1985 and the factory shells were just as old. Shot 12 times, including 3 factory. Not to bad for an ole coot shooting old reloads.

Not bad at all. The venerable 243 is underrated in my opinion. I think the issue is some see it as a woman's or adolescents cartridge. In reality it is an excellent cross over varmint to deer cartridge. I find it to be inherently accurate and a joy to shoot at the bench, so much so, I've been contemplating picking up one of the DPMS AR variants in 243.

May I guess which were the factory and which were the handcrafted reloads?............Excellent shooting BTW.
You can miss fast & you can miss a lot, but only hits count.

The 243 is a fine round and a good rifle seems to perform well with it. Its easy to shoot and versatile from varmints to deer. I shot it for several years in NRA high power and long range matches with heavy vld bullets. I used 85-95 grn bullets for 2oo and 300 yds, and 105-115 grn for 600 on out. Barrel is a hart over the coarse contour 1-7 twist. Only draw back is barrel life is on the short side of things. 2200-2500 rds full distances more if reduced coarse. This also depends on requiremments or needs.

I've been a .243 shooter since the '70's, red digger squirrels to deer and elk. BUT, I've never shot cast in it!
