30-30 and 190-200gr

I'm going to be loading up some 30-30 rounds using cast bullets from my new NOE 195gr copy of the rcbs 180 mold.
Data is few and far between for projies that heavy and the only data I can find is in the lee manual and for accurate brand powder that isn't available around here.
The powders that I do have are Reloader 15 and Reloader 10x which I have a few pounds of. I was thinking of using the 170gr data from the alliant website and reducing it by 20% as a starting load with Rl10x. Has anyone else tried these powders with the heavy projies?
I have read the article where the fella used the rcbs bullet and 28gr of varget with good results but I'd rather use the powder I have if possible.

I worked up a good load using h414, a little bit slower than rx15 but not too different. Mine was nearly a case full, and launched the rcbs 180 fn (dropped around 195 from my alloy) at just under 2000 fps. Pretty stout, wouldnt want to subject the gun to it all that often, but quite accurate and no leading at .311" through a marlin 336 microgroove

My load was about 34 grains, and if 28 varget worked then prob around 30 gr rx15 would get you started. If i were you i would wait for another vote of confidence before loading that.

As always, check for load density while loading, and squibs and primer condition after each shot. Good luck, ill bet you find a good combo!

If you are referring to the AC2520 then that would be pretty close general idea to start with. I would just go at the AC2520 minimum and work up .5 gr with the Rel 15. In my rifle around 32 gr of AC4064 is getting to the top and I use 33 gr of 4007 ssc, but can go a touch more and I don't think I can put enough IMR 4350 in the case unless I compressed it a whole lot. It is about the same with IMR 4320, but my rifle doesn't seem to like it. Oh, winny 94. You should be in the high teens and getting close to the 2000 mark.

In a Marlin XLR 30/30 I use the same NOE 195 grain bullet,but comes in at 200 grains. Anyway the most accurate load for me is 31.5 gr of AR2208, which i believe is similar to Varget

as per Terrance above Junior uses Varget. Varget is exactly AR2208, made here in Australia as AR2008, sold to Hodgdon and repackaged as Varget.

Yeah that is the article I read along with "the meplats tale" which convinced me to get the 195grer. I would use 2208 (varget) but I have three bottles each of Rl10x and Rl15 which I'd like to use up first as the 2208 is my go to powder for the .223 and small groups and I've almost used the last of it. I'll see how I go with the 20% lowered charges with the 10x and start at about 28-30gr with the Rl15.
Another question, Is there a reason why alliant only lists Rl15 for the lighter pills and not the 170gn? I would have thought the slower powder would excel with heavy bullets.

The RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1 has data for this bullet with 4831, 748, 3031, H110, Red Dot and 700X powders.

And the 748 loads are very accurate in Winchester 94's.

Oh, I forgot, I did a few test a few years ago with Rel 10 in the 30-30 with the 180 gr Lee that came out about 183 gr checked and lubed. But, they weren't published loads. They were low to mid range loads for plinking & possible CBA shoots and the boolits were WQ scrap & AC I believe. I started with 17.5 grs and went at 1 gr increments to 20.5 grs. There were no warning pressure signs. You should be able to get up to the 22 - 24 gr loads with it, but I would be checking on the way up to it. My best groups were with 18.5 grs at around 3/4" at 50 yds. But, my actual shooting test were not real precise. I was just getting a basic run down of the powder to see if it warranted further testing. My barrel heated up with it just a tad more than some of the other powders. But, it did catch my notebook in the noodle. Also, my rifle seems to like the slower powders more than the faster powders.

30.5 grains of 4895 in my carbine ran 2075 with decent accuracy.

So had a few shots with different loads today. I had alot of trouble seeing the target being hand scribbled on a piece of cardboard and had to shoot at 40m which was my limit of vision with the target and aperture sight. I am getting a mount to bolt my malcolm scope to the side of my '94 carbine to really try and get the most accuracy out of it and work up my best load before moving back to the aperture.
All of the loads are with new unfired federal cases and large std. federal rifle primers.
I started with Rx10 at 19grs which ended up being the most accurate out of the 4 I tested and was a very mild load even had some soot come back down the necks as it wasn't even enough pressure to seal. Will be loading more of these to test further as it'll be a nice target load.
The 22gn load has the slightest amount of flattening of the primer but didn't seem to kick to hard. Accuracy not the greatest but that also could have been me. Recoil was not to severe.
27gn and 28gn of RL15 didn't seem to be that accurate but again might be my eyes. Recoil was getting higher with the 28gn load and the primer has a bit of flattening to it. I did get a bit of smoke with the 28gn load aswell which might be the alloy getting to its speed limit and the rounds hit a couple of inches higher on the target than the 27gn load. I will compare the 28gn cases to the 150gn Federal factory loads I have next time i'm at the range to see what the primer looks like and measure the cases for expansion to compare to try and gauge where I'm at pressure wise.
I didn't do 5 shot groups with all of the loads as I didn't want to annoy the neighbors to much and the 3 big holes are from the 45-70 collar button I was trying out.

Lyman's 49th has load data for 170gr FP Hornady Jacketed bullet over RX15. Range is 29.0 to 32.0 with the 32 grain showing + for a compressed load and C.U.P. of 37,400.

Looking at that would be in line with your 28.0 grain load under 195 grain cast starting to show primer flattening. I don't like to run my 30-30 to hard as it just shortens brass life drastically.

Larry Gibson did some very nice work with the RCBS 30-180-FN over Hodgdon Leverevolution powder. I think there are some WW760 loads tested in this thread too.

Doesn't surprise me to much that RX15 lacked accuracy in your load. When I tried it in 223 under 50 grain varmint bullets my E.S. was very high. All I could figure was the little bullets didn't have enough restriction to get the powder burning. I was using Fed 205 primers which are very mild so perhaps a hotter primer would of helped. Match shooters use it a lot under 69gr MK's.

Bit of a grave dig but I've mounted the scope on my carbine and had a play with some of the loads again under this bullet and put them over a chronograph. I got spot on 1800fps with 28gns of RL15 and fairly good accuracy and with 21gns of Rx10 I got 1550fps with a std dev of only 7fps. Very happy with the 28gn load I'll be using it in an upcoming gong shoot that goes out to 500m.
