New to a Smoke Pole !

After being steeped in BP Revolvers for many years Remingtons and Colts, I'm getting a long gun.
Looking at as many reviews and opinions on line, which can be a misleading thing, so figured you all
as users will have the best views. I see your heads nodding up and down.
So I settled on a Hawken Great Plains 50 cal at MY affordable price. This one made by Lyman.
I love the real black powder and round ball that "takes me back" to years gone by.

Nice rifle, it will serve you well. As I recall, Lyman made those with two different twist rates, one for roundball and one for bullets. The faster twist will still be usable for ball, and is a good compromise. Do you know your twist rate?

    if it's a Lyman Hawken it's 1 in 48 twist.

    if it's a Lyman Great Plains RIFLE it's 1 in 60 twist.

    if it's a Lyman Great Plains HUNTER it's 1 in 32 twist.

Never owned or even shot one but have heard lots of good things about it. I don't recall ever hearing anything bad.

I have one in .54cal with both barrels. I've been having so much fun with the 1 in 32 twist hunter barrel that I have yet to shoot the round ball barrel. It's still in the box. This rifle is accurate and will let you know it's there with a 100 grn load under one of the plains bullets.

    scattershot,
Your question regarding the twist has been answered. Yes it is 1 in 60 a slow twist for round ball.
I have no intensions of shooting anything else but the RB.
32" barrel should get out to some nice distances. I also have revolver that consume both balls and conicles. These .45 pointy projectiles make me look good.
