    Load recomdations

350 grain .459 diam. cast, for a 45-70. I will be using 3031, Looking for an accurate load, not a shoulder buster for deer, hogs. Out to 125 yds. Marlin 1895 GG. Thanks

Lyman shows 47.5 grs. of 3031 in it's Trapdoor data, for 1500 fps. and 43gr. for 1300 + fps for it's minimum load. It does not show 3031 for any of it's heavier loadings for the Marlin '95 or Win. '86 in the Cast Bullet handbook #4.

I have some 405g, & use 40g of 3031. It was a good load out to 100yds, but I don't like the kick. Went to BP.

Do you have access to Mike Venturino's Book "Shooting lever guns of the Old West? Lots of good data there (includes 3031)

From my Handi Rifle and a chrono:

350gr Laser Cast sized at .459
    Reminton Brass
    CCI 200 primer
    IMR 3031 @ 40gr
    COAL 2.52

1330fps average and quite accurate, according to my notes. This is a standard load that I keep a min/max on hand.

This load can be shot most of the day without excessive pain.
    I serve Jesus exclusively...do you?

    .45-70 Marlin 1895 GBL
    .30-06 Win. M70

I finally obtained a feedback post!

That 40 grain load was where I stopped with my experiments with a 457-192. Much higher and I joined the owl that laid square eggs--I said "ouch".

Trapdoor level (black powder) loads killed lots of buffalo. How dead do you want them. I realize that you have IMR 3031 and 350 gr boolits. Lyman Trapdoor level has no 350 gr. boolits, for 330gr min 3031 43.0gr max 47.5gr . 385gr min 40.9gr max 44.5gr. Sierra has a 300gr jacketed bullet min 3031 38.4gr max 43.5gr. Sierra velocity goes from 1450 to 1600 fps. Lyman 330 velocities are from 1338 to 1532 fps and 385 gr velocity is from 1254 to 1449 fps. Jet planes can go faster but their trajectory isn't too bad to 125 yds and they will kill deer and hogs if hit right. Lyman has no 3031 data for 350gr boolits for 1895 but does have for 330gr . Start at 50.0gr for 1665fps and max at 55.0 gr for a compressed load at 1900fps. Sierra's 1895 loads ofr 300 gr start at 42.8gr at 1550fps and max at52.0 gr at 1800fps. Lyman data is from their 4th edition Cast Bullet Handbook, printed 2010. Sierra data is from their 50th anniversity manual, 4th edition, printed in 1995. Tried to copy corretly but it is late in the evening. The 1895 cowboy is a fun gun to shoot. I use light Trail Boss loads with boolit from 250gr to 405gr. Can't hunt with it in Cal since we have non-toxic zones, soon the entire state.
