200 yards is the furthest but normally 50 and a 100 for rifle. 25 and 50 for handgun unless it scoped than 100.
My shooting buddy and I have shot at 12 gauge hulls on their side at 100y. A miss in any 5 shot string was a loss unless both missed one.
Ruger 10/22's both although mine is older, with the original early 70's walnut.
Both at the time sported pretty large 3x9x40 scopes.
We were talking about trying it again, with live primers, a grain of red dot and flour as a charge.
So basicly reactive targets that really poof if you hit the primer. But we are both getting older so it is probably just talk.
I might be tempted to try it at 50 and then see how moving out to 75 goes.
Personally my longest shot was 185 paced yards to a big Jackrabbit at dusk, and I held for his ear tips and hit him in the eye.
It was early winter, snow on the ground and easy to spot him, took a good rest on a pickup hood.
But then I was young and stupid back then and tried all kinds of stuff.
I generally piddle around at 50 yds with leverguns and 22lr. 100 yds with a 22lr seems to require a better grade of ammo or shooter....in my case probably both!

Some of my favorite recipes start out with a handful of depleted counterbalance devices.
We shoot 100 and 200 yrds each month at our local club ... 40 rounds at 100 and 20 at 200 ....
Shooting a good .22 match rifle at 200 yards closely simulates firing .30 caliber at 1000 and is great wind doping practice.

I've done the same thing as Ghosthawk. We would set up 6" and 12" steel plates as far out as 300 yards and be volley firing a bit and listen for that ringing sound. At least half the time you were rewarded with a ping. This was done with a MKII and 10/22 usually from me.

This is pretty much the same for me. On a paper target, both rifle and handgun, 100 yards is as far as I've tried. I have shot Smallbore silhouettes with open sights out to 200 yards. Just playing around, handguns with open sights out to 400-500 yards. To reach that kind of distance, you need a good spotter and we were aiming at tree tops to hit ground level targets.....lobbing the bullets in like a mortar shell.
Shooting at steel gong at 300 count?

I shoot several 10 shot groups with each 22lr ammo choice at 100yds, early in the morning on a day with as little wind as possible to evaluate ammo/rifle grouping. Even though the combination will be used on targets at 200yds. Because at 200yds the grouping is more of a measure of my lack of wind reading ability than potential accuracy.
Since I don't ever shoot targets at a distance shorter than 100 yds, the grouping at shorter distances doesn't matter to me.
I've found that a quick sorting by best grouping at 50 yds, often doesn't show the same results at further distances.
If I only competed at 50yds, then all my shooting would be at that distance.
Vertical spread seems to be a problem with increasing range.
I only shoot 22lr's on paper, since I use cast Boolit centerfire's for (rarely anymore) plinking around.

I used to shoot my Remington 37 off the bench at 200 yards on those 50-ft NRA targets that come 11 on the paper. With RWS R-50 ammunition, I could sometimes get 5 shots in the black.
It really seemed to like that ammunition.
I remember shooting my CZ 452 out to 125 yards, but that was more of a curiosity check to see if the rear sight really tracked with the ballistics of high velocity .22LR. It did surprisingly well.
Sadly my eyes need a scope for squirrel hunting now, so it is basically a one range zero these days.

50 yards. If I need to shoot at an animal further than that I'll change calibers.
Moving back to Alaska
4 inch group at 300 yards yesterday, started at 100, 200, 250 and kept moving back as confidence grew .. . like to go out further but maxed out ( 330yds ) with elevation and canted base n rings.
not for animals tho, for sharpening wind reading / shooting skills . . . R.

Furthest groups?
219 yards (200 meters) on the 22BPCR Rams. In good conditions 2" vertical with Eley black match or red Ten-x in the Ballard. The CPA Stevens likes, among other ammo, Eley Edge, which is priced better than match. Eley Edge will hold a small group on rams as well in that rifle.
And, For longerange creedmoor practice, scaled targets to 300y, 270y, and 240y are about right to duplicate LR wind conditions BUT so far not practical for seeing bullet holes. Painting scaled targets on plastic freezer paper really shows the holes better out there. However, making the targets is just one more step in specialized shooting fun.....
