JWFilps, oh hell yea! That's what I'm talking about!
I have an older Magna-Ported AMT Automag V in 50AE. (Action Express)
I generally don't like to shoot ported guns, as they are extremely loud. Ported guns also seem like they bounce the majority of the muzzle blast back towards me.
I was working up a subsonic load for the above pistol, using a book [Lyman 49th edition] start load of AA #9. The powder was not burning well at lower pressures with the start charges, and was also leaving strange black soot marks on the tops of all the cases.
I was quite puzzled by this, but my shooting partner caught this picture in action, which greatly helped to explain things.
This was a starting load of 21.8 grains of Accurate Arms #9 using a CCI #350 LP Magnum primer with a 300 grain bullet in 50AE.
The pressure was too low with the bottom end charges of AA#9, and the cases were not sealing very well. Unfortunately for me AA#9 was not the optimum powder for a reduced or subsonic load with this cartridge in my situation.
I had excellent results using 26.5 grains of IMR4227 and a 300 grain bullet for an accurate, clean burning, subsonic load (and no soot on the cases) with this cartridge, that consistently cycled the Automag pistol. A quick chronograph sampling showed an average velocity of 999.75 FPS for the IMR4227 load.
The muzzle flash from a healthy load of W296 or H110 looks something like this coming out of the magna porting at the front of the barrel.

I don't know what mine look like, but you fellas have built in BBQ's! Fine looking guns and I like the fire ring. You could de-hair a HOG.

The ring flash seems to be associated with high-pressure rounds. It may indicate the presence of combustible material, probably carbon monoxide, which ignites on contact with the air.
Thanks to all who commented & liked my fire ring. It was just a lucky catch by a friend (Daryl Drake from Reno,) who was taking pics of all of us as we were shooting. My loads in the Hawkeye are "moderate" according to the manuals. But to me, the simple fact that the Hawkeye is a rare gun, and even rarer to have folks who shoot one, getting a picture like this is a huge reward!

As I was reading this post my wife walked by and said . " I see why they call them firearms ". Enjoyed the photos, thanks
These pictures help explain why you don't shoot a 460 or a 500 with the barrel over a leather sand bag!
Mark 5:34 And He said to her (Jesus speaking), "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affliction."
Nice! Keep them coming! I need to do more shooting at dusk...
Had a middle of afternoon video once that was AWESOME. My nephew was seated at bench and touched of a .460 S&W with the 200grain Hornady load. Was filmed from side with cell phone. At ignition, everything from his elbows to the muzzle of the comped 8-3/8 barrel disappeared in a ball of fire. When fireball disappeared the gun was back on rest like had never been fired!Durn phone crashed and lost the video
Dan Wesson lots of 2400 and a XTP Not my usual rest
