Question What weight bullets are possible with RF jackets?

OK another newbie question here. I just made my first batch of 55gr .224 bullets using RF jackets & they came out GREAT even though I haven't shot any yet!...LOL

Without adding a lead point & without trimming, what weight bullets can I make with .22 LR cases? Can I make a stable 50gr with a bigger opened point? Is there an ideal weight for this type of jacket? Same question for .22 Shorts. I been avoiding picking up the short cases, but I may need to try some.

As always, thanks for your advice in advance.

without trimming....and it depends on the ogive of the bullet.... I really like to make 52-53 grain bullets now. Forms up really well with a small open tip.

You should be able to get around 60-62 gr without having exposed lead using spent .22 cases.

If this info helps, I'm using RCE dies with a 6S ogive.

    Thanks for the good responses.

I made some 60gr bullets with a standard LR case. Did not close up as nicely as the normal 52-53gr I make. Lead was all the way to the end of the jacket.

Mine come out around 57gr, still with an open point. Maybe 60gr, depending on brass/jacket thickness & a little heavier core?

I'm using RCE Walnet Hill and 224-6S dies. When I make them as open base (FMJ) I am able to squeeze 64 grains in. Can only get 62 grains when making them open tip:

Great info here. What about a .22 short case? 40gr max? I hear "stinger" cases are a bit longer, but haven't seen one yet.

Stinger cases are a little longer (about 1/10 ") but they are nickel plated . I think they would be kind of hard
to form. The nickel could be chemically stripped off but that sounds like a lot of work.

I've made 40gr out of 22 short for the 5.7x28. You might be able to shoe-horn a few grains extra into a short, which measures 0.5" after derimming. I'll try some this evening.

Shorts are almost non existant in Australia. I cut LR cases to length and then derim. Main stay is 40 grain open tip with a 1E point. I also make 35 grain with the same jacket length. Cutting cases gives you more flexability but is also more work.

What do you use or how do you cut them to length?

Cutting jackets has been discussed many times on this forum and there are several ways to do it. I use a mini cut off saw and a jewlers blade. I built a jig to hold the case while cutting. Do a search on trimming rimfire jackets to length and you will find pages of ideas and methods. There are many who do the same as I.
