At least 6 mag's per handgun or Semi-Auto Rifle - at least two to three for manual bolt actions.
One thing to consider is what happens if the magazine falls out of your firearm when your
out walking. I have had it happen and was fortunate enough to find it on the return trip back to the car. But's that why I say two or three for any that take a magazine.

One thing that I have found quite useful is magazine loaders

    Ruger Pistol - Ultimate

    Other magazine loader for Ruger 10/22 - Ruger AC556 - M16 22 conversion - UZI 22 conversion etc

    - note: I have the old metal ones for 30carbine, 223, 308 - I don't like their new plastic ones.

I forgot I have a savage rimfire that also requires mags. I didn't think about it because I have never even loaded it, I just bought it because it is a left hand bolt. This thread reminded me of two things. I should shoot this thing, and I need to get a spare mag for it. lol I try to keep one spare mag for my centerfires that require them too.

I have 3 for my 22/45 and 4 -10rd and 3-25rd. for my 10-22, never need more than 2 at the range. If I'm ground squirrel shooting, can't carry enough

    I'd call 4 a bare minimum and 6 a good start.
