    1885 High Wall 45-70....what's a good load?

    Hello fellow casters,

Well, after a long wait I finally purchased a Winchester 1885 in 45-70 (24" barrel). It should arrive on at my ffl on Monday. Hopefully, my brass will be then as well.

So, can you all share some good loads with me? I'll probably look at the 300-400 grain sizes first. Main purpose is brush deer hunting and hog eventually.

    Thanks in advance.

    Craig

These work well in mine. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine.

    Thanks pworley1.

How do you like the Lyman 157122? I like the thoughts of the hollow point for better expansion and thus knock down on whitetails. What size does it drop at? I still need to slug my barrel as I'm not sure how they run from the factory on these.

I like 24 grains of 4227 with filler wad and what ever bullet you shoot.

Guys, since I had already loaded for my father all of my 405 hollow base boolits, I decided to pick up some of the very sparse bullets that I could find for the 45-70. I just couldn't wait to shoot the new High Wall. So, I got Barnes solids 300 grainers. Loaded up with 4227 @ 45.5 grains around 2300 fps. Got it sighted in at 100 yds and the last two shots were one large hole. Man do I love the High Wall. Its been worth the wait.

Now to get my lazy but to casting!! Hopefully, I can get some casted up today, go back to the range tomorrow, and take a nice deer this weekend with it (preferably cast). More to follow.

    Hello all
    I like the Lee 340gr. Fp with 48.0gr H4198 for about 2000fps

As much black powder as you can stuff in the case with a 535g Postell bullet will get the job done!

The hollow base from my dads marlin lever shoot great. I used H322 and it shoots clover leafs at 100 yds. Still haven't had a chance to try lead in the 1885 yet. Probably after thanksgiving. But for the price of the lee mold you can go wrong with the 405 grain hollow base boolit.
