I believe if you open the action It will reset the sear . Then you can recock .. Least its that way with all my gen 1 Contenders

hammer falls Once... Open action then recock

It is only good for one cock is it is a older model. Break it open, and close it again and it will cock.

Sounds like the hammer spring is broken. A fairly common occurrence every 5k-10k shots.

The hammer spring was just replace on the 10th and a test shot at smith and wesson was fired nothing near 5k to 10k shots.

My only thought is that maybe you have some frame stretch that is maybe causing some lockup issues in the action

Check your trigger set screw, maybe it's set too light. The Contender is not an overly complicated firearm. I would disassemble and see what's going on in there.

Use marker on the barrel locking bolts, then shut it and open it and check for marker worn off. Probably won't show much so the locking bolt top surface need to be sanded down a little so they will go under the frame to push the interlock back. Each barrel needs to be checked for this.
If you slam the barrel real hard and it cocks then it is the locking bolts. Common problem, along with the shoulder of a bottleneck case not not pushed back enough. An automotive feeler gauge can be used between the breech face and the end of the case can be used to check this. I set my sizing die for about .0015" to .002" clearance, or headspace.
