Thinking of getting a new mold for my 45-70

I am thinking of getting a new mold from NOE, a 350 grain HP. I have IMR 4198 and 3031. It seems that with 4198 I get a bit more velocity out of a 400 grain bullet, and not quite as much with 3031, but the reduced recoil from the 3031 is also nice.

So will I see the same trend with the 350 grain bullet?

What other powders do you like?

This is a marlin lever gun so it can handle full tilt loads.

RL7 is a good stand by and I've heard H322 works well. Unique and 2400 for lower velocity stuff.

I've got his 350gr FP GC mold and have been using IMR-4895, I think the last batch I shot were around 46gr, accurate and fun to shoot. I haven't had time to crank them up and see what they'll do yet, I shooting a converted Enfield No 4 Mk 1.

I have great regard for the Lyman 457322 (about a 320 gr bullet depending on your alloy). This bullet was designed by Ideal for a leading magazine editor "back in the day" for deer use. It is named after the Editor, a Mr. Gould. The Gould bullet was first used with black powder to great effect. When throwing a bullet of that weight and expansion potential you do NOT need extreme velocity.

NOE's present day hollow point mould will be MUCH easier to use allowing you to get real production out of the hollow point mould (something that can NOT be said of my original Lyman single cavity hollow point mould).

I would encourage you to think positively about the NOE mould for this use (in a 45/70 Marlin).

I have used RL-7 for years in my various black powder cartridges when I wanted/needed smokeless. It works very well giving all of the accuracy available in the particular platform I was using and it also has such small grains that it measures well. It works extremely well as the smokeless component of a black powder duplex load, also.

It works well in all three load levels, too:
1 - Trapdoor Springfield
2 - Marlin Lever Action
3 - Ruger #1 and #3

there is plenty of data out there to reduce the thump of the 45/70 I load most of my 45/70 to the data for the trap door Springfield it can be fired in my Marlin, but I can not do it the other way around. even for deer and pig in the swamp land around here 405gr. loaded to trap door levels is very deadly

3031 acted like it wanted to work under my RD 460-350 but Rx7 is what works in my Guide Gun. Suspect the NOE boolit is even better.

I have some 325 grain loaded with RL-7 and H-322.
Just waiting for the chance to test on target.

One day i might have to get a 400+ grain mold just for kicks.

I shoot the NOE 350hp in my stainless guide gun with duplex bp loads and bp lube. It does great, I can't wait to hunt with it.

I have used Accurate 2015 under 300 grain bullets with very good accuracy and high velocity with both the 300 RCBS gas check flatnose and the jacketed Barnes Original. After fooling with 400 and 350 grain bullets, I preferred the lower recoil and flatter trajectory of the 300's. I have used the 300 grain bullet to shoot through both shoulders of elk when broadside shots were presented. Full penetration is normal on most quartering shots on elk also with the 300 grain. The heavier bullets provide a lot more recoil with little benefit in killing stuff, especially in the light Marlin 1895. Mine was bought in 1980, straight grip, no safety, 22" barrel.

N.O.E.is cutting a 325+- hollow point mold that does look good.
Might have to get one and play some more.

I found the Lyman Gould HP bullets to blow up on impact at 1800fps, so I reduced the size of the HP pin, by running a fine file against it with a drill press spinning the pin. HP is now only 1/8" deep, and bullets seem to hold together more.

So help me out here....what/who is NOE? I think I'd like to look into this 350 mould. Did some shooting with Hornady's 350 JFP and it performed great. Unfortunately, can't find them anywhere right now as I imagine this a seasonally run. No telling how long would have to wait.... so looking for a 350 cast that is a good performer as it appears from what you say, the NOE is. Thanks for help.

NOE for boolit casters is like whiskey for the Irish, keeps us broke but happy. His moulds aren't expensive, it's just hard to go to his site without finding something you need. Al's a good man and an excellent machinist, you'll enjoy doing business with him.

Yeah I was @ his site the other night and Black guarding (him) about where I could get .22 cal. gas checks. Got to READING over in his drop down list wondering what other **** he was selling. Embarrassment, it was Hugh sacks of "Wait 4 it", GAS Checks.... I am looking in the mirror AGAIN @ an IDOIT.. Custom quality at working man prices. I pretty much have been skimming down my molds to all NOE. 4c Aluminum molds. MP molds are nice but multiple year wait times and international shipping just aren't worth it for me....instant gratification is much more rewarding.

I just received the FP version of the 350 grainier from NOE. It cast very well. With my alloy it casts 356 grains. A double thickness of litho plate out of a Freechex III tool produces a perfectly fitting gas check. They also chamber perfectly in my Ruger #1. Hopefully the rain holds off long enough today to allow me to shoot them. I didn't think I needed the hollow point version of that boolit. I loaded some with 3031 and some with 4759 for testing.

I have to echo that noe makes some really nice molds, but I do like the mp/miha molds a little bit more.

I have the Gould bullet mold, or at least I think it is 457122 with 330 grain up, maybe this isn't the Gould?
