Hey, if pretty was required, I couldn't leave the house either. Slap a scope on that puppy and see if it can make holes tighter than the ones it's got built-in!

If that came up for sale locally for $175 I would probably own it and use it as a truck gun. Sure isn't pretty but either am I.

There's one of these from the '50s in a LGS (742?) for $299 asking price but it's been there a while. Well used, but no abuse. No scope and looks like it never had one.

I've always been curious, how is it to reload for one of these? I know with a lot of autos, a guy has to be careful what pressure curve you load to in order not to damage it and make it function properly.

    Can these function with cast?

I think the 740 and its successors are one of the reasons RCBS makes small base .30-06 sizing dies.
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

After failing to get any mounts to line up with the holes, including the mounts made for this rifle, I filled the holes that I could with screws. I dressed it all up with a file and JB Welded the whole mess. I'm waiting on it to harden and will start sandind/filing on it tomorrow.

The Pick Gnomes are getting into bubba gunsmithing! They sure steal a lot of picks and have several of mine. Seems they are trying to find new uses for them.

I had a 740 and a 742 in 30-06 at different times. No problems using a standard die set and full length sizing. They both liked slightly reduced loads rather than max. loads, with j-bullets. Never tried them with cast.

This gun should have a bolt that is different from the 740/742 guns. Supposed to be stronger I read.

The pawn gods have smiled on me again. Today I took in a Remington 740. I has no extra holes but all the metal has been spray painted black.

We load cast for a sons 742, works rather well with Lee 170gr and a light load of H4895. I use standard lee 30-06 dies.
