    Old Herter's

Someone on CL is selling these. Are they worth it? Both for $100

I'd worry a lot about all the rust. If critical surfaces in the powder measure, dies,
ram, etc are rusty and pitted, IMO it is a terrible deal. I'd look them over closely
before I'd give a dollar. And do they use std shell holders? If not, it may be hard
to set them up for you cartridges.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

An adapter to standard shell holders is readily available. If this was local to me I would jump on it. Always needing another junk iron project for the electrolosis bath.

All that rust is going to be a problem but if you are needing a project go for it.

    Hi,
Ah jeez! Run do not walk and get those!!! WD-40, 0000# steel wool and elbow grease will take care of the rest!

The rust is not bad, just surface coating. It will come right off. They would bring $100+ on eBay.
The 72n shotshell loader is an interesting gadget in it self. You will be limited to one shot/powder charge through the measure as the extra bushings are missing.
The Model 3 (late) press is a good one.
    Go for it.

Fortunately you don't have to worry about bushings with the Model 72. Shot and Powder charges are adjusted by a series of stacked washers on each side of the measure for each charge.
    Pretty simple, pretty primitive.

The bushing holes on the Model 72 Powder Measure is filled with washers.

To increase your powder/shot charge, remove washer(s).
To decrease your powder/shot charge, add washer(s).

The washers basically take up volume.

The shellholder adapter works well unless you're trying to prime using the press. The primer cup plunger won't be long enough to protrude through the extra thickness of the adapter. Not an issue if you hand prime, though.

I've turned a few old Herter's presses on Ebay for a fast buck. Two of them I bought at a flea market for $5.00 each from whom appeared to be an illegal alien. In broken English he asked what they were. He didn't understand "handloading" or "reloading" but the phrase "bullet machine" made sense to him.

A massive heavy C-type Herters press that used the large shell holders or needed the adapter. I surprisingly got over a hundred for it.

That was apx 10 years ago I sold the C press. Before you go and invest your $$'s hoping to make a fast buck. Best to check on Ebay and see if the old presses are still fetching more than they are really worth. Shipping weight will be in excess of 20-25lbs.
