    Un-explained flier - explained

While shooting my Rock River Ar this morning I would occasionally have some boolits fail to hit paper @ 100 yds. I figured it was just one of those things I would never know why. While packing up to leave by buddy (whose brand new chrony I was shooting over ) claimed he knew why I was getting fliers.

That would explain it. Thing is I don't remember any gas checks that appeared to be even close to loose when installed. They were seated on a Saeco #221 boolit (Noe)in a push- through die @ .225" and then lubed in a .2255" die on a Lyman 450. I don't see how they could have come off but I think we can all agree they did!!!

    Kinda makes you go HUH?

Bad thing about shooting you chronograph is . . . you can't eat it.

I found out pretty quickly that those expensive plastic covers for the Chrony are not reallllly that expensive after all.

I guess I wasn't clear before. That is not where boolits hit the chrony, that is where gas checks hit the chrony. There was no penetration, on dents. The fliers are from losing the checks.

The factory could have fixed it if you hadn't field dressed it.

You may have to glue the checks on.

Sorry you can't enter this in my closest recorded chrony contest as the chrony must be hit by the entire boolit not just the gas check. But thanks for trying!
Closest recorded range Chrony kill (3 feet with witnesses)

That's EXACTLY the reason I built a steel plate "shoe" for my chrony (s). Now all that sticks out is the rods, and I use wood dowel rods because they still get hit occasionally. It looks like a little steel bobsled with 1/4 inch sides, and a front angled plate 1/2 inch thick.

No matter how many times I see this I still think it is funny as h*ll each time. I guess I am sadistic or something.

Mine is the basic Chrony with the read-out in the front of the unit. What I assume was unburned powder cracking the thin plastic over the read-out (probably too close). I made a piece of 1/4" thick plexiglass to friction fit the 3 sided recess at the front. No more problem.

Chrony Condoms made of steel....great idea......the (now defunct) local archery shop should have had one of them....he had 4 or 5 chronies on the wall that had been given "the shaft". Arrows are just as deadly as bullet/boolits apparently.

I did the same thing to my first Chrony, after that I made a 1/4" Plexiglas shield for the front of my Chrony. A 3/4" X 4" X 6" piece of wood with a 1/4" grove in it and the Plexiglas glued in place works great to ward off gas checks. Personally I have had lots of the old Lyman gas checks ( non crimp on ) come off upon firing and they shoot right into the group all the way out to 100 yards. I don't think the old Lyman checks were intended to stay on. I have recovered a lot of my boolits from a dirt bank and rarely ever found any gas checks still attached, maybe 1 out of 50. On the other hand, Hornady crimp on checks almost always stay on the boolits.

Every time I see a shot up chrony I get a line in my head...."aim low boys, they're riding shetlands"!
An old Cherokee was teaching his grandson about life. "Inside me two wolves fight," he told the boy.
"One is evil - he is anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, lies, false pride, and ego. The other is good - he is joy, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, generosity, truth and faith. The same fight is inside you - and every other person, too."
The grandson thought for a minute and asked,"Which wolf will win?"
The old Cherokee replied, "The one you feed."

All good ideas on protecting the front of the chrony. I am getting ready to send mine back to get rebuilt as it is almost 30 years old and giving me some suspect numbers. In the mean time I will concentrate on making sure the checks dont come to begin with

And, for the record, I have yet to actually shoot the body of a chrono, yet!! I have hit the wires that hold the sky screens and sent a chrono tumbling down range from the muzzle blast from my 45/70. I do have complete confidence that I will eventually accomplish total destruction one of these days.

Just use Mamasan's standard recipe for rat.

    Works for dog and cat.

Serve over rice with nuoc mam.
