    5744 Powder is AA?

In the Lyman cast handbook #4 for 308 loads it lists 5744 for one of the powders to be used with cast boolits. Is this AA5744?

My Lyman #3 doesn't list 5744. But it does have a section up front with all the different powders being listed. Don't know about edition #4. That being said Accurate (AA) 5744 is the only one I know of...but then I don't know everything. My wife says so.

AA IS the maker of 5744, I think they added XMR or XMP, or some letters in front of the 5744.

Well 5744 (XMP5744) was/is an Accurate product. Last I noticed the paper manuals had a whole section devoted to it.

No personal experience in the .308, but in my .35 Rem it liked to be pressured up to about 25K psi.

My Lyman cast handbook #4 suggests 5744 as the most potentially accurate load for cast 200gr boolit.Last weekend I used 31gr Varget @1608fps and 1 1/2 to 2" groups.
I will be playing with Varget and 5744 this weekend using the NOE 311365 198Gr weighting 202 with powder coat and gas check.

I have found that 5744 is one of the few powders that will cycle the action of my AR-10 and shoot close to POA of J-words.

SR4759, which is directly above it on the burn chart, will not. It does shoot, tight groups in both the semi-auto and the bolt-gun, but mostly at low-end charges. Groups open up fast as powder, increases. YMMV.

5744 is referenced in chapter 9 in the 4th. Again on the powder burn rate chart in the back it list 5744, Accurate.
Last time I shopped for powder Varget wasn't available. So I bought an 8lb jug of AA-4064. Slower than IMR-4064. Short stick grain like Varget and closer to it than it is to IMR 4064. Anyway in my 30-06 it burns clean where Varget is dirty. If you're looking to run over 2,000 fps with a 200 grain boolit in 308. The slower Varget or similar would be good. Since 5744 will pass up 40,000 psi. For a 1,900+ fps load. 26.0 grains of 5744 will have you in the ball park. 26 or 27 grains of 5744 will burn clean and have very light recoil and blast. Your slower powder will have a noticeably bigger bark and move your shoulder back just a bit. In my 30-06 I'm running 5744 under the 180 grain bullet and AA 4064 under the 200. That could change after more testing.

I ran into the same question a while back. 5744 = AA5744 = XMP5744. All the same stuff, depending on when you bought and how old it is. I have all three right now. Great powder with the 311299.

The one thing I've dealt with in using 5744, from the day it was first offered by AA , I think it was about $ 5.00 a pound way back when is that is doesn't meter very well. Close enough for just killing cans and metal targets, but for attemting MOA work, one has to trickle it.

Just to confuse the issue Accurate 5744 is now sold in the UK as Lovex D060.
Sorry to add to the confusion!
I use it with the 180 to 190 grain boolits in .308 and 30-06 to very good effect.

Not sure when they did it but. AA which I think is part of Western Powders. Shortened the grain on 5744. That's published in there literature. Was dropping 13.5 grains a couple days ago into my 222 Rem. Using my Lyman 55 with the big drum shut and only the top two brass slides opened up. After it gets up over about 20 grains it will run through my Harrell's Culver rifle size measure. Charged my 30-06 with 26 grains under the light bullets and it flowed nicely. Needs a handle tap to keep it settled and you do cut a grain half the time. I'm testing 5744 against 2400 in the 222 under 60 grain boolits. #225646.

Could be. I thought I'd read they reduced the size. But have been looking for half hour and can't find that info. Probably one of those internet rumors.

As my memory goes the Original 5744 I bought was Israel Surplus imported by Accurate and a flake powder. Worked so Well I ordered by 8 pounder - and it came as short stick's??? - Same burn rate and accuracy so all was well - they have changed the name's as the supplier changed I suppose.

I've still got unopened jars of XMP5477 bought in the late '90s I think. My understanding was that it was a surplus powder at first, then when it caught on they had it made new in Czech Republic and added the XMP moniker. My jars are a short cut stick, marked Product of Czech Republic.

Just my experience but the newer 5744 bridges bad in my Forester powder measure. be sure to weigh every charge thrown lest you end up with a very hot load from bridged powder from the charge before. I nearly ruined a model 71 348 win this way with a serious pressure excursion.

I have been using AA5744 for my 45-70 ammo and now for other light rifle loads. It looks like AA5744 is going to be a good replacement for IMR4759 especially since all 3 of the SR powders will be discontinued at the end of 2014.

Lyman #4 lists 5744 as the most accurate powder tried in the 30-40 krag for the lyman 311284 so I've been looking for some. The cupboards are bare however at the LGS.

I was looking for a replacement for SR4759 and had thought about 5744 as I do have some that I used in my Pedersoli RB in 40-65. Do not like to pay the higher price for 5744 than any of the other powders though.
The Sportsman's Warehouse near me had some Alliant 300 MP, a magnum pistol powder. I bought it and loaded up some boolits for my Ruger 41 mag with WLP primers. Burned dirty and was not impressed. I had read several articles and the authors varied between primers so I tried Fed magmun pistol powders. The made the loads come alive! Shot a 220gr Seaco TC with 23.5grs at over 1,550 fps with 1" groups at 50 yards.
I then tried in my MN 7.62 X54R with the 314299. I ended up with 3 groups under 1" at 100 yards and one at under .7". The gun has a 2 X 7 pistol scope on it. Takes a couple of more grains of powder than SR4759 and seems to be a touch slower than 5744.
I am going to buy some more of this.
