    Tula primer question-help!

I hope this is in the right place. The short version; MidwayUSA mistakenly sent me 5,000 .223 Rem small rifle primers. I ordered standard small rifle primers. Some of these will be used in either bolt actions or single shot Hornets, not semi-autos. Supposedly the .223 types are harder? Anyone with experience with these care to comment? Midway says primers are not returnable.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Work up your load and run 'em.

I don't understand... in your post it looks like what you are saying is both primers are one and the same just Rem. brand. Are they benchrest primers? If so those are what I have had the best loads with in .223. , Rem Benchrest primers..... Yea shoot em.... whatever they are... Ok.... I re read post.... not familiar with those primers.....

They may be harder, but it won't be a problem.

Rem makes a small rifle & small rifle bench, no specific 223 primers. You should be fine with either.

Yes they will work they should have a harder cup like a cci military primer If Midway made the mistake there would be a refund or reship in order

I'd keep them and shoot them. The only reason to use the harder SRPs is if you're using them in a semi-auto for very high-volume shooting, and even then if you have a trigger with a lighter hammer spring you can't use them reliably. I see the hard primers as a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

So Tula has 3 types of small rifle primers:
    regular
    223
    magnum

I can't help, I was just trying to understand the question. From what it says on midways product description it sounds like regular and 223 are the same power but the 223 has harder cup, in which case I'd say your fine...might cause misfire on light strike, but probably not...someone else will know more than me.

I re-read the original post looking for "tula" somewhere but didn't see anything. So, how is this post about Tula primers? (I've had lots of success with Tula primers)

Everything in the OP was specific to Tula, who has three SRPs (standard, 223/556, and magnum) instead of two (standard and magnum).

Their 223/556 primer is comparable to a CCI#41, which is a standard-heat small-rifle primer with a harder cup to better handle being used in an AR15 (in theory).

Seems like he says they sent him Remington Small Rifle Primers, but he ordered standard small rifle primers. Am I not reading it right?

I'm not trying to be difficult or anything. Just trying to get a clear picture of what happened. If I had ordered remington primers but got Tulas instead, I would not be a happy camper. Tulas are okay primers, but remingtons are generally more expensive so I'd probably want to ensure I got what I paid for.

The round is known as 223 Remington, also 223, also 5.56 and probably others I've missed.

Aren't the harder primers for ARs meant to protect from slam fires? That's what I always thought...

Yes, I'm aware of the variations on the 223 Remington round.

    Yes.

When's the last time you heard of a legitimate slam-fire from a round with the primer seated properly and fired in a clean weapon? It's just not an issue unless your FP is caked with crud and you seat a primer high.

FWIW the OP may have actually got the primers he wanted. I just looked at the different Tula Primer stock numbers on the Powder Valley website.

    Copied:

    TUL223 * TULAMMO SMALL RIFLE PRIMERS (KVB223) (1000) Out of Stock $23.50
    TUL223M * TULAMMO SMALL RIFLE MAG PRIMERS (KVB223M) (1000) Yes $24.50
    TUL556M * TULAMMO SMALL RIFLE MAG PRIMERS (KVB556M) (1000) Yes $24.50

The TUL223 is their standard small rifle primer
The TUL223M is their magnum SRP
The TUL556M is their 'hard cup' SRP.

Now I'm sort of curious which one he got. I have some myself but they're not in reach at the moment.

The primers you ordered say TUL223, or TUL556M?

I have the TUL223, and they are regular SRP, but the cup is slightly harder I have found with TULA. You should not have an issue using them in the single shot, but they can be slightly harder to seat.
