    .484 Casull Alaskan

    Hey Guys,
I have one of these on order and I am wondering if anybody out there can recommend some loads for this gun using cast bullets? I have a 300grn mold and a 400grn mold on order. I also plan on using gas checks. Thanks for your help!

    Sorry guys,
That's what happens when typing after bedtime, errors. It should read .454 Casull. Anyways, I would like some recommendations on loads with cast bullets. I have molds that will cast a 250grn, 300grn, and 400grn bullet. I have ordered a Checkmaker and plan on using gas checks on the bullets. So if you have some loads that have worked well, I would appreciate if you would share them with me.

    Thanks
    Alan

    Whew,,, I was wondering.
I too recently got my first 454 Casull. I'm currently working on a 305 grn WFNGC boolit. So far,, I haven't found a magic load. But I'm having fun trying.

The biggest problem you will have is crimp jump when you approach 454 level loads in the short barrel. I shoot a 4" Redhawk converted to a 454 and I'm shooting a 355gr WFN at 1200-1300fps (bought this LBT mould off another forum member a few years back) 2 different loads. This is not a max 454 load. In fooling around I've loaded them hotter (which is not needed) but crimp just was an issue. I've experimented with a 400+ grain. RCBS 405-FN (.458) dropped at 425gr, I sized it down to 454. Worked up an accurate load at about 1000fps but jumped crimp enough to seize up the cylinder after 2 rounds.

Load the 250gr in 45 Colt brass over 8gr Unique for a plinkin round. Get some H110 and load up the 300's and 400's to where they don't jump crimp, are accurate and that you can shoot accuratly. Don't get hung up on chasing max velocity. All you'll get is a seized up flame thrower.

Lil'Gun load, better for cold weather. Note the velocities on this load. Closer to 1200. This load is 454 brass trimmed enough so the OAL will allow the load to cycle in my 454 levergun as well.

    H110 a little hotter...

    435gr load that jumps crimp...

    my 13" 454 Encore likes a 310gr boolit over 27.5gr of H110
    or a 240gr XTP over 35gr of H110

No worries about crimp jump tying up the cylinder with that one!

Snyd has done a lot of work on this. I would search his threads.

The 300 grain class with a nice meplat (72-80) is going to do you well for hunting just about anything. If you are working with thin skinned animals then the 250 grainer would work as well with less recoil. I find that the heavier for caliber boolits are easier to find accuracy with due to the longer length (bearing surface) but to each his own. I prefer a 330-350 grain cast boolit for the 454 Casull but shoot a 310 grain design well too. My Ruger Bisley large frame 45 Colt I prefer my 310 grain design but also shoot a 260 grain LFN style design with success, I just don't shoot the lighter design as often.

Curious, how much does that gun weigh? Optics?
