    358318 in the 35 Whelan

    Ok I have this boolit.

I'm trying 4064 in it to start.

Anybody else use this boolit? What are you using for powder?

You have a very nice looking boolit there! Good luck with it!

4064 is my "go to" powder for one of my Whelen's. It pushes the 280g 358009 Lyman very nicely and gives a velocity of 2150 fps. Accuracy is 1-1/2 inches at 100 yds which has proven to be MOM(minute of moose) and MOE(minute of elk)! This gun has a Douglass 1:12 twist.

My latest Whelen is a new Remington 700 CDL with a 1:16 twist. I haven't tried the 358009 in it yet, but the RCBS 35-200 does extremely well with Unique. Best group so far is 4 shots in .88 inches at 100 yds, but the 5th shot blew the group to 1.88!

Just using straigh WW alloy, nothing special. The temp? whatever it takes to get good fill out. I don't have a thermometer and never have used one.

    Hey DJ, nice lookin boolits. I use S.R. 4759 with my 358318's. 29.5 gr. @ 1880fps (chrono'd) grouped the best so far @ 1.012" at 100 yards.

FWIW, I load 52gr of 4064 behind a 250gr JSP @ 2272 fps and good groups. Not sure how much you would need modify this load for cast boolits.

    Blammer :

I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesn't use ( and probably never will ) a thermometer.

    Blammer,
I have a NOE 358318 that I use in my .350 Rem. So far 65 gr. of AA8700 is my best load. It is producing 1800 fps and 2 moa.

You just shot some holes in the ships of the guys that think they need such and such a special alloy at 897 BHN dropped from a pot set at exactly 737 degrees.

    Good for you!

    bret,
you forgot the decimal point, the best BHN is 8 point 97 as measured on a Lee Hardness Tester.

    to update this.

I have not gone back to trying this bullet lately because I found that to get my projectiles to really shoot well in my whelen I need to water quench them. Basically harden them just a tad so they will shoot really well.

unfortunately I have not cast any lately, so nothing available to test and shoot.

That is a nice boolit, if the Thor GB mould doesn't work out I'll have to try it. Without a HP it should be about 250 grs but it's probably more stable with a HP. I'm wondering about HT'ing as well. I think my initial loads were a bit too fast for my alloy. I suspect to realize the potential of a 4064 or 4350 load it's going to take some hard lead shot or heat treating, or both.
So many moulds, so little time. Reckon you'll get a chance to try it anytime soon?

    Thanks Blammer,

I was looking for boolit designs for the 358 winchester on the web and ran across this. Its a great looking boolit, wish Tom could make it in a nice 2 cavity brass.

I cast the identical boolit from an NOE mould. 38-40 grains of H4895 does very well with a BHN13 alloy air cooled in my Whelens. Using 4895 is almost a mantra for me with that cartridge. I am quite happy with the results of these at about 1900FPS.

It is called doing a Forum Search. As there is a whole bunch of information to be found here both New and Old. Nothing wrong with bringing and Old Thread back up to get more information or give it.
