Does anyone have enough experience with the many brands to offer an opinion??

My brother likes the Mountain House stuff.
I dont think I've ever tried any.
Mountain house is very good. They freeze dry vs dehydrate their food. A lot of it is very good. The beef stroganoff , the spaghetti, lasagna, and the chicken breast with mashed potatoes are all very good. The chili mac gave me the runs. Some places have their freeze dried peas are good if you can find them.
I've also tried the Backpacker's pantry, it's alright but not as good. You can read reviews of their products on backpacking sites.
One note, Regardless of the brand you'll need a lot of water. So keep that in consideration. The peas and some of the other veggies can be eaten as is, the rest require usually 2 cups of hot water.
I'll add another vote for Mountain House. I picked up a bunch of it when I went elk hunting late last year. Ate it for breakfast and dinner for 5 days. The dinners were all edible and for the most part tasted pretty good. The breakfasts were egg with bacon. The bacon flavor was good, but the texture of the eggs was wierd. Also you ended up with a good bit of excess water that you had to drain off as you ate it. Otherwise, it got soupy.
I will put home dehydrated against the best of them. You can pick a unit up for under $150 and make fresh stuff into dried that lasts a long time and reconstitutes well. Cost is 1/4 of the cheapest commercial stuff you can find.

Another vote for Mountain House. Used to buy it when I was actively hiking. Considering how awful some of the brands taste. The mountain house meals were pretty good. They weren't great. But well above just edible.
If you aren't able to do home dehydrated, these links are where I get my food preps:
Reliable companies I use as sources either for individual food items and assembled "food units" - lots of experience with these as a blue water sailor in my younger days, all are suppliers to US Navy and the commercial maritime industry

We have Mountain House available several places here locally. It's pretty good stuff. Our grandkids love the freeze dried ice cream.
Be careful,
