i melt mine on my camp stove in small casting pot then i pore into
a 2 1/2 oz sinker mold pewter weighs less then lead so that 2 1/2 oz
turns out to be just a little less then 1 1/2 oz so i just add one to my
pot when im casting
kids that hunt and fish dont mug old ladies
If you are actually getting heat transfer past the "skin" of the metal and if it ain't melting at normal casting temps....it ain't pewter.
Are you sure it's really pewter? Real pewter will melt in a 20 pound electric pot very easily. Wilton, Sexton, Pewterex and others make aluminum alloy cast tableware that is often sold as "pewter" but isn't.
May not be then its not marked but looks like pewter,,would a propane torch melt pewter?
Yes, easily. So would a soldering iron.
ETA: Melt some lead in your pot. Take a small piece of your "pewter" and place it on the surface. Real pewter will melt right in. The aluminum alloy stuff will float there for days.
Hope you didn't get hurt too badly on it. Here's a thread with lots of pictures of the real stuff...
