    44 cal question

I am not new to casting but have some questions of some one more experienced than I ,in the area of 44 special.
I have loaded a lot for 44 special but hope to have a new 44 special soon.
I'M trying to keep the recoil down a bit and over all weight down a bit for a good carry all day in the woods gun .
MY quest is to try to keep the bullet in the 230 to 240 range NO HIGHER . Velocities in the 900/ 1000 FPS this will be in a converted Ruger Black hawk .
Molds are available in the LYman for a 225 grain bullet ( Close ) BUT i want to go with hollow points if possible . Not many Hollow point molds out there and the one I can find is 255 grain WAY To heavy for what I want .
MY theory at this point was to get a mold in the 265 grain class ( I was surprised to see that only Saeco offers one ) And then use my Foster Hollow pointer to make a hollow point and have the weight reduced to the area of 240?
IS anyone using the Foster hollow pointer for their case trimmer ? How does it do in that regard and does it remove a uniform amount of lead to make it practical to keep bullets in the same weight range >
I got this Hollow Pointer last year from a guy getting out of reloading who never used it. It is brand new and will attach to my Foster Case trimmer so I have never used it .
ANY experience with this type of hollow pointing is appreciated THANX

i know larry gibson uses his forester to hollow pont many of his boolits noses.
if you don't get many replies i'd p.m. him and see what he has.
    tell him i sent ya.
otherwise i'd just look for a good 225 gr mold.

I used to have a Lyman 220 grain keith type similar to 429221. I really liked it but I can't find one now.

Take a look at this Saeco.

Last I checked NOE website they had two bullets in stock that might meet your needs, if I am reading right that you want a 230 to 240 gr hollow point.

They had a copy of the RD 265 gr with hollow points and a copy of the classic Keith with hollow points. Both in limited quantities with hollow point options.

WILLIAM thanx for that Idea on the Saeco mold I DO have a Lee mold that is advertised as a 214 grain SWC . I have used it for years and currently load that bullet in my ROSSI 720. It throws a bullet at 118 grains +or - from my mold with my mix .SO I'm close to that . I would want to go a bit higher though in weight so that was my thinkng to get around 230/ as high as 240 but with a hollow point I Have a lot of RD molds and I did think of his 265 Mold , but want to avoid Gas checks in this application . NO need at the velocities I'd be using .
SO I guess ill just have to experiment . Thanx

I bought a new 429421 about 2 years ago. I'm working from memory but I think they weigh right about 245grn. They do cast a little on the narrow side at .427-.428 (again, from memory) but shoot decent out of a 4" 624.
7.0 grn. H-Universal gives spot on 900fps (that's chronied, not guessed).
Not really attempted any other load or hollow pointed versions thereof.

You would have to check NOE website as to what he has in stock, but some are GC and some are PB for same design.

I bought a single cav 429421 and sent it to Buckshot for HP conversion. He does excellent work and charges very reasonable prices. The boolits drop at 222 grains (pure lead sweetened with a little tin).

    trail boss

try a soft alloy in lyman 429421 with trail boss. it shoots slow 800-900 fps in that cartrdige and figuring out the load is easy. take a bullet and measure the depth you wANT TO SEAT IT . then put powder in to the base of the bullet Don't compress the powder. that is your max load and it is nasty with soft lead alloys. I'm penetrating 8" of poplar with 100% expansion.
