    Wheel Weights for rilfe bullets

I am wondering if anyone uses straight WWs for rifle bullets, & how well they would work. I don't want any leading. The two moulds I have are a Lee 405 RNFP Hollow base & a NEI 450gr RNFP gas check mould.
I'd like to keep the loads to 1400fps or a bit lower. I'd be using a Marlin 95 .45-70. I think that velocity would be in the Trapdoor level depending on powder.

I have cast thousands of six-gun bullets, but very few rifle bullets. I'd like to cut my cost a bit & be able to shoot more.
    Thanks

You should have no problems with ww's as long as fit is right.

I've launched air cooled lyman 358009 cast from coww's out of my 350 rigby @~2200 fps, no leading and moa accuracy. Clip on ww's make a very good bullet alloy for handguns and rifles.

Ditto. Fit is the most important failure point IMO. If your boolit fit your barrel right, it can forgive some other problems with lube and powder. I've shot some full throttle loads outta '06 without leading with a boolit that fit .001" over groove dia. Assuming your barrel does not have wild dia. variation, straight WW's will shoot fine.

    Hope that help.

I run 50/50 WW/pure in my 45-70. No leading at all as long as fit is good at those velocities.

You'd be surprised how fast you can push an air cooled WW boolit with a decent lube and good fit.

Thanks fella's sizing seems to be the ticket. We've discovered that in revolvers too. I appreciate all the quick answers. The NEI bullet really looks nice & at 1300fps or so should have no problems even with deer as well as practice.

... WW's, Bhn 15.4 plus 1/2% tin at 100yds. Zero leading and no lube starvation.
Twenty five shots - 14 of them in the ragged hole - 45-70 and BP...

This is what I shoot in my 45/70 at 1500 fps, air cooled and not water dropped, with no leading.

As stated before, "Fit is King".

I'm just getting into it myself. Have a good amount of COWWs. I also have several bars of 63/37 solder.
weights approx. 1.6 lbs. What is s good ratio for good tin bar to cows for nice fill.

I casted a few with straight cows and will be testing a few rounds soon.

I shoot water dropped from my Garands at about 1900-2000 fps, and from my 300 win mag at about 2200 fps. The bullet is a 200 grain gas checked Lee. Good accuracy, shiny bore.

I shoot air cooled wheel weights from my Garand. I experimented with the load until it would reliably cycle the action. I haven't chrony'd it yet, but I don't have any leading problems. If recoil is any indication, though, they're quite a bit slower than M2 ball ammo.

Proper lube and proper fit is the most important thing.
